The book starts with a reference to Antoine de Saint-Exúpery staying at Hotel Touring in 1930 as he had been employed by the air postal companhy in Argentina. He didn't know then that there would be another world war in nine years and how his book would be the most printed and translated one in the twentieth century.
The novel then takes us to Barcelona. Santiago Sotomayor is a private investigator who is following Rebeca Lafont, the owner of the biggest chain of discos in Spain. Santiago is noticed and two of Rebeca's thugs grab him, and he is questioned and threatened. Salvador reveals that Rebeca's boyfriend hired him because he doesn't trust. Rebeca laughs and tells him to stop the commercial relationship he has with the boyfriend.
Some time later Rebeca comes to see Santiago as she wants to employ him. She tells him that her daughter Ariadna is in Argentina, completing a thesis about The Little Prince and Saint-Exupery. The thing is that Ariadna was supposed to stay in Argentina for three months, and she is still there a year later. Rebeca fears that Ariadna is now in a sect as she is now living with a man, Cipriano Lloyd, who could be her grandfather, and there is something weird about that relationship. What Rebeca needs is someone Argentinian, and Salvador is half Argentinian. The problem is that Santiago can't leave as he and his sister are the main carers of their mother who has dementia. However, the woman who looks after their mother when they can't hasn't been paid the last month, and they have no money. So Santiago and her sister Romina finally agree that it is a good idea for him to take this case because they need the money.
Interesting start. I wonder what will happen in Argentina.
