The Sleeping and the Dead 3 (Pages 177 - 294)

 SPOILERS!!!

Hannah remembers Michael telling her that her mother was buried in Millhaven, where Hannah now lives. So she decides to go and have a look at the cemetery. After sorting out the graves which could tally with the dates, she discovers that Michael's mother was called Maria, and his father was Crispin and Michael's real name was Theo. Hannah tells her psychologist colleague, Arthur, and before they talk to the police, Arthur discovers that Crispin was an MP and he remarried. His new wife was Stella and they had a daughter, Emma, who died in a fire in the house.

Hannah tells Peter and Stout, and Peter goes to see Stella Randle, who tells him that Crispin died two years ago, and her daughter's death was her fault. At the time she had pospartum depression and was heavily drugged. She believes she left a burning cigarette in the nursery, which started the fire. Stella thinks that Crispin blamed her, and from then on he sent his son to boarding school, and Stella never saw Theo again.

A new death happens during the investigation. It is Mel, Rosie's friend, who is found dead. Someone stabbed her with the same kind of knife that Theo was killed with, so the police start investigating these two crimes as they seem to be connected.

Peter and Stout discover that the Brices were acquainted with Chris Reeves, the man who Stout suspected of killing the mentally-impaired boy. Stout becomes obsessed with Reeves, and Peter agrees to set a unit to watch the man. Then they discover that there is a connection between Mel and Theo. They both stayed in Redwood, a home for children with problems, and in this institution Cleeves worked.

I wonder if Stout's suspicion is right and Cleeves is the killer. But why killing two people thirty years apart?
