 The book is set in 1888 when the crimes of Whitechapel took place. At least five of these homicides are attributed to the unidentified serial killer known as Jack the Ripper, who targeted impoverished women and sex workers, leaving the cases permanently unsolved.

 The  novella is set in a mansion near Whitby  in 1897. Whitby is a seaside town, port and civil parish in North Yorkshire. It is located at the mouth of the River Esk, where the North York Moors meet the Yorkshire Coast, and has a maritime, mineral and tourist economy. The town has a strong literary tradition. Part of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula was set in Whitby, incorporating pieces of local folklore, including the beaching of the Russian ship Dmitry.
