SPOILERS!!!
The novel alternates between the present perspective of Flora, the perspective of DD, and the past.
In the parts about the past we learn how Flora gadually felt she belonged to Jacob. An event that changed things was when he took her to see a woman, Lindy. To Flora's surprise Lindy turned out to be Jacob's daughter, and she is as sadistic as he is. After that, they forced Flora to act as bait for women, and Flora had to agree. Three women died, and at present Flora feels terribly guilty.
The end of Flora's captivity happened when Jacob became careless, contacting her mother through email, and there was a police raid. Jacob gave Flora his gun and asked him to shoot him. Flora did but before shooting, she promised that he would find Lindy and kill her.
In present day Flora tries to get her and Stacey out of the building where they are locked, but the doors won't open. Stacey faints because of her injury, and Flora hears steps coming up the stairs. At the same time DD and her unit are trying to find out the kidnapper. The key is the bar, and they talk to the manager, Joceline Ethier, who they think had an affair with Devon but won't admit to it. Then they also discover that Joceline is from Florida, and they suspect that she may be Jacob's daughter. The police recently discovered that Jacob had a child by a woman he raped. DD and Samuel question Joceline and make her bring someone that knew one of the missing women, Natalie Draga. Larissa, one of the waitresses, says that she and Natalie were friends, and she did have an affair with Devon, but she never told much about her family or anything. Then when Samuel and DD insist that Joceline tell them that she had an affair with Devon, Larissa says that they are wrong, and the person Joceline had an affair with was herself. And another detail that Larissa tells them is that Natalie was from Florida, and then they realise that they have been barking up the wrong tree, and Natalie is Jacob's daughter and the kidnapper.
Flora and Natalie/Lindy have now come face to face, and Natalie intends to kill Flora, but the latter won't give up. In the fight they have, it is Natalie that ends up dead, and it is then that the police arrive.
I enjoyed the book even though I don't very much like plots about kindappings. There are parts that I find too far-fetched, but in general this is a uncomfortable but at the same time enjoyable read.
