Characters in this book:
- Sergeant DD Warren (45) is the detective who gives the series its name. She is therefore the main character. DD is tough and resilient. DD didn’t have a relationship for a while, but then she met Alex Wilson, a professor in the police academy, and they started dating. DD fell pregnant and had a baby boy, Jack. Now DD and Alex are married.In the previous book she was injured while on duty, so she returned to work on restricted duty, which was not easy for her.
- Detective Alex Wilson is a professor in the police academy and met DD when he was assigned to shadow Phil Leblanc, a detective in DD’s team. Alex and DD hit it off from the first moment and they began a relationship. Now they are married and have a son. Alex is very sweet to DD and they make a great couple.
- Jack Wilson (4) is DD and Alex’s son.
- Detective Phil Leblanc is one of the detectives in DD’s team. He is the father of four children.
- Neil (34) is another detective in DD’s team. He is gay and once he dated the medical examiner, Ben, for a while. He is red-headed and looks much younger than he is.
- Carol Manley (33) is the new detective that came to replace DD, and as a consequence, DD feels jealous of her.
- Ben Whitley is the police medical examiner who dated Neil for a bit.
- Deputy Superintendent Carl Hogan is one of DD’s superiors.
- Bob and Edith Wilson are Alex’s parents. They have moved to Boston to be near their son and grandson.
- Betsy Leblanc is Phil’s wife.
- Bobby Dodge (36) was central in some of the novels. He used to work as a sniper for the Massachusetts State Police, but he left the force to become a detective in the Massachusetts State Police. Bobby has a complicated family history. His father was a drunkard, and his mother left when he was six. Since that day he has never heard from her, and he has grown up feeling upset and angry. After his mother left, there was an incident in which his father stabbed Bobby’s brother, George, and that made him stop drinking. His brother also left, and he hasn’t heard from him either. Now Bobby is married to Annabelle, who he met when he was investigating her case, and they have a baby girl, Carina.
- Annabelle Granger Dodge is Bobby’s wife and they now have a baby girl. In a previous book she was a key character in the case Bobby and DD investigated. From the age of seven, her father kept moving them to different cities and changing the names of the whole family. Actually, Annabelle’s real name is Amy. Annabelle never knew why they kept moving, and then six bodies were found in an underground chamber, one of which belonged to her childhood friend, Dori. In the end Annabelle discovered that what her father was afraid of was that his mentally-unbalanced brother would hurt Annabelle. Tommy eventually located Annabelle, and at the end of the book he almost killed her.
- Carina Dodge is Bobby and Annabelle’s daughter.
- Patsy Warren is DD’s mother. DD has always had a difficult relationship with her mother because she feels that she was not a wanted child. Patsy and her husband live in Florida.

These are the characters in this book:
- Florence Dane (Flora) is the main character in this story. When she was nineteen, she was kidnapped and was held captive for 472 days. She developed a bonding with her kidnapper, and she missed opportunities to be rescued. It was the police who saved her, and she killed Jacob, her kidnapper. After being rescued, Flora was never the same, and she feels that she destroyed her family. Flora then started to train physically and acted as bait for men who were likely kidnappers. The book starts when she is abducted by Devon Goulding, and she throws antifreeze liquid and some other chemical she finds in the rubbish, and Devon burns to death. The day after she is kidnapped and discovers that she is held in the same place as the victim of a kidnapping she was investigating.
- Jacob Ness was Flora's kidnapper.
- Dr Samuel Keynes is the FBI victim specialist who helped Flora after she was rescued. Flora has a special attachment to him, and he seems to know her better than anyone else. Samuel Keynes is attractive and tends to wear very smart clothes.
- Natalie Draga/Lindy is the kidnapper who alongside Devon Goulding kidnapped Stacey. She also kidnaps Flora when she discovers where she is. Lindy is Jacob Ness's daughter, and she and her father forced Flora to act as a bait for women who later they raped and killed.
- Special Agent Kimberley Quince was the FBI agent who rescued Flora.
- Stacey Summers (19) is a girl who was kidnapped from a bar. Flora is intent to find her and rescue her, but that backfires because Flora is abducted once again.
- Rosa Dane is Flora's mother. She did everything that the police told him to help find her daughter. Rosa feels that her daughter didn't return the same person but she loves her very much and is loyal to her daughter.
- Darwin Dane is Flora's brother. After the kidnapping Flora was not the same, and it meant suffering for him, so he decided to leave and start life in London.
- Devon Goulding (28) is the bartender who kidnaps Flora, and she burns him to death.
- Kirsty Killer is one of the victims of Devon and Natalie, and her body is found by the police.
- Pam Mason is the victim advocate in the Stacey Summers case.
- Colin Summers is Stacey's father. He contacted Flora and paid her to find his daughter.
- Pauline Summers is Stacey's mother
- Mr and Mrs Reichter are Flora's landlord and landlady.
- Joceline Ethier is the manager of the bar where Devon worked. DD starts suspecting her.
- Larissa Roberts is another waitress in the bar where Devon and Natalie worked, and she gives DD and Samuel information that leads them to the kidnapper.
