New Book - The Bullet That Missed - Thursday Murder Club 3 - by Richard Osman (Pages 1 - 97)

 First Published: 2022

In this new book Joyce and the others get together to look into the death of a journalist, Bethany Waites.

Bethany was investigating the fraud carried out by a woman called Heather Garbutt, who worked for Jack Mason. One night Bethany's car was pushed off a cliff, but her body was never found. Ron invites a famous newsreader and Bethany's ex-colleague, Mike Waghorn with the excuse that Ron will be part of the programme. Mike brings his make-up artist, and she and Ron hit it off and start dating. When Elizabeth and the others tell Mike that they want to discover the truth about Bethany, he wants to help.

In prison Connie Johnson, who in the previous book was arrested for drug dealing and murder, rules the roost in prison, and she has access to everything she longs for except for freedom. She knows that Ron and Bogdan are responsible for her being in prison, and he swears that when she is released, she will kill Ron and Bogdan.

Then Ibrahim goes to see her because Heather Garbutt is in the same prison, and somehow Connie finds Ibrahim agreeable, and she agrees to do it if he comes to see her every week as a psychiatrist. Connie then goes to find Heather and asks her the question straightaway. Heather says that she won't tell her anything, but what Connie gets from her is that she didn't kill Bethany. It seems that she is protecting someone. Some days later Donna and Chris go to see Elizabeth and the others because they have found Heather dead in her cell, and there is a paper with a message saying 'they're going to kill me. Only Connie Johnson can help me'.

Apart from this case, Elizabeth and Stephen are taking a walk when someone kidnaps them. When their masks are removed, they find a big man, probably Swedish. He doesn't give them his name, but what he says is that he wants Elizabeth to kill Viktor Illyich, a very dangerous man from the KGB. It seems that Elizabeth knows this man, and they may even have been lovers. When she refuses to cooperate, the Swedish man, who they nickname the Viking, shows her photos of her and Joyce taking the diamonds from the locker in the station, and he says that Viktor is the real owner of the diamonds, and he won't be happy. Elizabeth refuses to kill him again, and then the Viking says that if in two weeks she doesn't kill Viktor, he (the Viking) will kill Joyce instead. My, my. What a mess Elizabeth is in.

And Donna and Bogdan are an item now, but they are keeping it secret. Elizabeth knows that Bogdan is hiding something, but however much she asks, he won't say a thing.

Another good mystery for the Thursday Murder Club!!!
