Return to Quail Crossings 2 - The End (Pages 147 - end)

 RATING: NICE

SPOILERS!!!

I have to say that I liked the first book of this series better. I think the plot of this novel is okay but it lacks deptth.

As I suspected, Joy is not really Evie's daughter, but Harriet's. Harriet returns to Knollwood, demanding Evie give back her baby. In the conversation we discover that when Harriet had the baby, she didn't bother looking after her, and it was Evie who took care of her. Then Harriet left with one boyfriend, and since Evie had no money, she decided to return to Quail Crossings. Harriet now mentions that the boyfriend dumped her and now she wants her baby back.

Evie is desperate because for her Joy is truly her daughter and loves her inconditially. She realises she has to tell Robert, and when she tells him, he is not pleased. He doesn't understand why she didn't tell him sooner, and they can get into trouble for kidnapping a child. Then he leaves in a huff.

On this day a storm is brewing and becomes a twister. When Evie goes to see Harriet, she wants to know why she wants to have Joy now, and Harriet says that she wants what Evie wants. Then Evie makes her see that is nto true and she doesn't want to be a farmer's wife, and she tells her that she can find a job and find a man. The two girls make out, and then they find in the middle of the tornado, and a tree falls on Harriet, and she dies.

The rest of the family also struggle to be safe. Alice, James and Joy are safe in the basement. Tiny and Elmer find themselves in his truck, and the tornado tips over the car. Elmer is worried when Tiny remains unconscious, but thankfully, she recovers. Bill and Lou Ann remain in their home but they do not suffer any damage. Now Lou Ann is pregnant. And Jacob helps the boys who beat him up to hide in a wardrobe and they remain safe.

The ending of the book is a happy one. Evie and Robert are in love and happy with their baby daughter. The Wheatons know that Joy is Harriet's daughter, but they agree to keep the secret. Dovie is also in love; she has found someone to love, Gabe, the pilot. Lou Ann is now expecting her longed-for baby; and Tiny and Elmer are also in love. And Jacob has found a home in a black community.
