Return to Quail Crossings - Characters

 SPOILERS!!!

These are the characters in the novel for further reference:

  • Dovie Grant (37) lives with her father on Quail Crossings, the family farm. Dovie lost her husband, Simon, and her five-year-old daughter, Helen, on St Valentine’s Day when they had a car accident on their way to a dance. Dovie wasn’t with them because she had a migraine. Dovie is still mourning them, and when her father brought the Brewers to the house, shewas  all against it, but little by little she was won over by this good family. In this book Dovie falls for Gabe, a pilot who looks very much like Simon. At first Dovie thinks she is doing something wrong by falling for Gabe, but she finally realises that she can love Simon and Gabe.
  • James Murphy is Dovie’s father. He is an honest man with a golden heart. When in the first novel he met Bill Brewer and his siblings in the local café, he couldn't  ignore them and offered Bill a job on the farm. James grew fond of Bill and his siblings, and now the Brewsters are part of his family.
  • Bill Brewer (23) is a young man who found himself in charge of his siblings when their parents moved to California and left the children behind. For months Bill moved from place to place, using his truck as a mobile home for his family. Thanks to James’s generosity, Bill got a good job and a place where his siblings could be safe. Bill fell in love with Lou Ann Garber and they married at the end of the first book. Now Bill and Lou Ann are expecting their first child.
  • Lou Ann Brewer (22) is Bill's wife. Lou Ann is very sweet and kind, and in this book she was worried because after being married for five years she hasn't fallen pregnant. She tries all kinds of ludicrous tricks, and she eventually gets pregnant.
  • Alice Brewer (11) is Bill’s youngest sister. Alice is sweet and determined, and everybody loves her. She managed to melt Dovie’s heart in the first book and even got to tame Norman, the terrible goose that terrifies everybody.
  • Elmer Brewer (15) is Bill’s brother. He is quite shy and quiet. He and Tiny Clark become friends and in the first book they decided that they want to be boyfriend and girlfriend. Elmer and Tiny have a few fights because Tiny doesn't think that he is really into her, but thankfully they manage to sort out their disagreement.
  • Tiny Clark (Mary) is Elmer's girlfriend. Tiny is determined, energetic and a chatterbox.
  • Evalyn Brewer (Evie) (19) is Bill’s older sister. When Evalyn came to Quail Crossings, she was contrary and hostile, especially towards Dovie because she thought that they could find their parents. Five years later Evie returns from California where she has been living with Harriet because they wanted to be actresses. Yet, she returns to Quail Crossings with a baby she claims it is her. On the way there she meets Robert Smith, who is going back to Knollwood to work on the farm his parents left him. Evalyn and Robert pretend they are married, and they eventually decide to marry for real. Harriet turns up and she is the baby's real mother, but she dies in the tornado. At the end of the novel Evie and Robert are in love.
  • Robert Smith is Evie's husband. He and Evie are in love at the end of the book. When Robert first meets Bill, the latter doesn't hide his distrust, but Bill eventually realises that Robert is a good man. Robert now runs a pig farm.
  • Joy is the baby Harriet had, but when she neglected her, Evie looked after her and loved her as her own.
  • Gabriel Pierce (Gabe) is the pilot who comes to the town. He and Dovie fall in love.
  • Harriet Wheaton and Evalyn are friends and decided to move to Los Angeles as they wanted to be actresses. Harriet got pregnant and had Joy, but she didn't want the responsibility, so she left. Almost a year later she returns to ask for her baby back. Evie makes her see that she doesn't really want that. Harriet dies when a tree falls on her during the tornado.
  • Jacob Henny (16) is the black boy that Alice helps, and when he is beaten up, the family takes in at Quail Crossings.
  • George and Kathleen Wheaton are Harriet's parents. They realise that Joy is their granddaughter, but they agreed to keep quiet and let Evie raise Joy.
  • Frank Kelley is the bully who beats Jacob up along with his friends. He is a racist and claims that he is doing what his father wants. Frank Kelley is hurt during the tornado, and it is Jacob who helps him and his friends to find shelter.
  • Paul and Tom are Frank's friends, who helped him to harass and beat up Jacob.
  • Mrs Pearl is a neighbour in the town.
  • Charlotte Wheaton used to be Lou Ann’s best friend, but when Bill appeared in the first book , she got obsessed with him and did everything to trap him. Now she is married and has four children.
  • Sara Clark lives in a farm nearby and is a good friend to Dovie.
  • Joan Garber is Lou Ann’s sister and Alice’s best friend.
  • Hannah Garber is Lou Ann’s mother.
  • David Garber is Lou Anna’s father. He is a bully and used to hit his wife and children. James and Bill warned him that if he touched his family again, they would make sure that he didn't do it again.
