The Miford Secret 3 (Pages 90 - 168)

 SPOILERS!!!

Mrs Hoole is ready for the seance. Apart from Louisa, Nancy and Debo, the attendees are Kick, Billy, Charles and Adele. Mrs Hoole places a glass disc and asks those present to place their index fingers on the disc. Then she keeps asking questions, and the disc moves. When Mrs Hoole asks if the maid's cap belongs to someone who is dead and if someone present murdered her, Charles removes himself from the group and leaves. After him, everybody leaves except for Louisa, Nancy and Debo, who stay with Mrs Hoole. What the woman tells them is that the cap belongs to a girl who served in the house, called Joan Dorries. Back then Mrs Hoole worked in the house as well, and she and Joan became friends even though Mrs Hoole was ten years older than she was. Then one day Joan disappeared, and Mrs Hoole even talked to the police. Yet, everybody assumed that Joan had left of her own accord because her suitcase and some of her things were gone. Mrs Hoole tells Louisa that the things that were left behind were things she knows Joanne wouldn't have left, and she is certain that if Joan had left, she would have told her.

Debo tells Mrs Hoole that she will be driven home, but the car won't start, so she stays in the house. Then the next day Mrs Hoole appears dead in her bed. In her had she has the maid's cap and there is vomit next to her bed. Louisa thinks that her death is suspicious but the doctor thinks that it is a natural death, but they need to do a postmortem as the lady didn't die in her home. Then an inspector comes to talk to Louisa; he is the same policeman that Mrs Hoole talked twenty-five years ago. He doesn't seem to give much credit to what Mrs Hoole told her back then, and he thinks that there are no reasons why her death should be considered suspicious. I wonder if Louisa is right and Mrs Hoole was murdered. If so, who by? Most of the people in the house were not part of the household twenty-five years ago, and Billy and Charles were too young.
