The Mitford Secret - Characters

Regular characters:

  • Louisa Sullivan (Cannon) (40) is one of the main characters. At the beginning of the series she was living with her widowed mother and her uncle Stephen, who forced her to pick pockets. Things came to a head when Stephen tried to use his niece to pay off his debts and sell her to some men. Thankfully, Louisa managed to escape and got the position of nursery maid for the Mitfords. Louisa met Guy Sullivan when she was escaping her uncle, and they became closer. In a previous book she decided to resign from her position at the Mitfords’ household because she wanted to become a policewoman but her application was turned down because she had a criminal record. Louisa and Guy became an item and got married. They have a child, and now they have their own detective agency.
  • Guy Sullivan (41) is the second main character. Guy couldn’t go to the Great War because of his shortsightedness, which made him feel ashamed. Then he got a job with the railway police, and he felt proud even though his brothers teased him about it, saying that he wasn’t a real policeman. When Guy solved the crime in the first book, he got a job in the Met but he felt frustrated because he was kept in the office and saw little action. Guy fell in love with Louisa, but when she stopped all communication with him, he became engaged to Sinead, but in the end they broke up because she wanted to go home to Ireland and knew that he wasn’t in love with her. Guy and Louisa are now married and have a child. Guy got disillusioned with the police in the last book and resigned, and now he and Louisa own a detective agency. Now during the Second World War Guy is part of the Home Guard.
  • Maisie Sullivan (5) is Louisa and Guy’s daughter.
  • Deborah Mitford  is the youngest child in the Mitford family, and in this book she married Andrew Cavendish. She had a miscarriage. 
  • Andrew Cavendish is Deborah Mitford's husband. He is fighting the war.
  • Nancy Mitford is the eldest daughter and she and Louisa became friends when Louisa started working as a nursery maid for the Mitfords, and they still have a close relationship. Her father and sisters often call her Koko. She is now married, but she has been able to have a child. In this book there is a reference to her having an operation, a hysterochtomy. 
  • Unity Mitford  is another sister, who is nicknamed Bobo by her family. She becomes passionate about Nazism and Hitler. She tries to kill herself and the bullet becomes stuck in her brain. In the book Unity is portrayed as frail, behaving as if she were a child, and firm in religious beliefs.
  • Jessica Mitford (Decca)  is now living in America. Her husband died and she has a daughter. Constancia.
  • Esmond Romilly was Decca’s second cousin and husband. He died in the war.
  • Constable Mary Colon/ Moon used to be a policewoman. Mary is determined and brave, and now she is married to Harry. They now have three children
  • Harry Conlon is Guy’s friend. Harry is small and blonde, and he likes playing the saxophone. Harry left the railway police and now works in the 43 nightclub. He and Mary Moon are married.
  • Peter Rodd is Nancy's husband. He is now fighting in the war.
  • Mrs Sullivan is Guy’s mother. She looks after Maisie when Louisa has to work for the agency.
  • Diana Mitford Mosley is the third Mitford sister. Her family often call her Deerling. Diana married Bryan Guinness at 18, but when she met Sir Oswald Mosley, she fell in love and decided to leave her husband. Diana has two sons by her first husband and two by her second husband.. Now she is in prison for her sympathies with the Nazis.
  • Pamela Mitford  is the second daughter. Pamela is calm and enjoys a quiet life in the country rather than the parties that her sister pushes her to go to. She is now married to Dereck Jackson. And while Diana is in prison, she looks after her children.ç
  • Dereck Jackson is Pamela's husband.
  • Bryan Guinness is Diana’s ex-husband.
  • Jonathan Guinness  is Diana’s son
  • Desmond Guinness  is Diana’s son.
  • Alexander Mosley is Diana's son.
  • Max Mosley is Diana's baby.
  • Tom Mitfordis the only son. He is a lawyer but now he is fighting the war. He refused to fight in Europe because he is a supporter of Hitler, so he was sent to Africa.
  • Ada was the maid working for the Mitfords. She became a good friend to Louisa.
  • Luke Meyer is a friend of the Guinness’s. He is a journalist and became a good friend to Louisa. Luke lives with his aunt, and even though he tries to be discreet, he is a gay.
  • Sir Oswald Mosley became Diana’s lover and now they are married. He has a reputation to be a womaniser, but they eventually marry. He is in prison now.
  • Jennie Roper is Louisa’s friend, and it is thanks to Jennie’s recommendation that Louisa got to work for the Mitfords. Jennie now lives in America with her husband.
  • Irish Mitford is the Mitfords’ aunt.
  • Mrs Windsor is the Mitfords’ housekeeper.
  • Mrs Stobie is the cook working for the Mitfords.
  • Nanny Bor is the nanny working for the Mitfords. Her real name is Laura Dicks.
  • Hooper is the Mitfords’ driver.
  • Lady Sydney Redesdale is the Mitford siblings’ mother.
  • Lord Redesdale (David Mitford) is the Mitford siblings’ father. He was in Ypres during the First World War.
  • Socks is Guy’s dog, which he got after Louisa’s uncle joined the army and she didn’t know where to leave the dog.
  • Winnie Cannon is Louisa’s mother. She decided to go and live with her sister in Sussex.
  • Richard Roper is Jennie’s husband. He is an architect.
  • Stephen Cannon is Louisa’s criminal uncle. Stephen decided to join the army to Louisa’s relief. 
  • Walter Sullivan is Guy’s brother.
  • Ernest Sullivan is Guy’s brother.
  • Bertie Sullivan is Guy’s youngest brother.
  • Johnny is Ada’s husband

Characters in this book:

  • Mr Formby is the local store owner, and Louisa believes that he is involved in selling black market items.
  • Ellis is the butler. He took over his uncle, who served the Cavendishes for many years.
  • Lord and Lady Cavendish are the owners of Chatsworth House and Deborah's parents-in-law.
  • Kick Kennedy is invited by Deborah to Chatsworth for Christmas. She and Billy Cavendish are in love, and they want their liaison to be accepted by their parents.
  • Lord Charles is Lord Cavendish's brother.
  • Lady Charles is Lord Charles's wife. Her name is Adele Astaire, and she used to be a Hollywood artist, the sister of Fred Astaire. Adele and Lord Charles's pain is that they haven't able to have a child that lived.
  • Mrs Airlie is the Cavendish's cook.
  • Lucie Dupond is the teacher in Chatsworth House, as the place was turned into a school. Lucie turns out to be the daughter of a former maid who died, and she comes to take revenge. She tries to kill the Dowager, thinking that her late husband is her father. 
  • The Dowager Duchess is Lord Cavendish's mother.
  • Group Captain Nesbit is stationed nearby and becomes acquainted with those in Chatworth House. Louisa discovers that he is a spy for the Nazis and killed Mrs Hoole when she realised who he was.
  • Billy Cavendish is Lord Cavendish's brother. He is in love with Kick Kennedy.
  • Eliza Hoole is the woman who comes to Chatsworth, claiming that a maid was killed there twenty-five years ago. Eliza Hoole is killed while she stays in the house, and Louisa starts her investigation. 
  • Max Landesman is a gardener. He tells Louisa the truth about his past and his relationship with Joan, the maid. During the First World War he came to England from Germany as a spy, but he got cold feet when he learnt how some of his copatriots had been executed. He kept a low profile and was hired at Chatsworth. There he fell in love with Joan, and she got pregnant. They couldn't marry because his past would be revealed, so they agreed she could go to Canada, and he would follow some time later. Joan died in childbirth, and Max never discovered where the baby was. When Louisa tells that Lucie is his daughter, he goes to see her in the police cell where she is held in custody as she tried to kill the Dowager Duchess.
  • Joan Dorries is the maid who Mrs Hoole claimed was killed in Chatsworth Castle.
  • DI Tucker is the local policeman who leads the investigation.
  • Dr Dunn is the local doctor, and he tells Louisa that Joan came to him when she was seven months pregnant.
  • Sergeant Booth is DI Tucker's subordinate.
  • Derek Lancaster is one of the nightwatchen.
