The Alchemist's Daughter 2 (Pages 91 - 187)

 SPOILERS!!!

Emilie starts realising that she has lost control over her life on marrying Aislabie. Now that he is the owner of Selden, he has big plans to rebuild the whole house, including getting rid of the laboratory and the room where Emilie was born and her mother died. His plans also include redesigning the gardens and also getting rid of the small village and its tenants. Emilie is outraged but Aislabie has made up his mind, claiming that they can't look at the past and look forward, and the tenants will go to live somewhere better.

When Emilie goes to church, Shales gives a lecture which clearly implies that he is against Ailabie's plans, and from the way people look at her, she knows that she is disliked for the decisions her husband has made. Her intention was to talk to Shales to get his help in convincing her husband to stop his plans, but once he has publicly stated his opinion, she can't do anything.

Emilie gradually becomes aware that Shales is a decent man. His wife died three years ago, and that is the reason why he came to Selden. Shales cares about the people in his church, and he has been good to Emilie's father, and he is also good towards her. When Aislabie takes her to London for Newton's funeral, she feels upset, remembering her father and her unborn child, While her husband does nothing to comfort her, Shales notices her tears and comes to her.

A turning point in Emilie's life is when her husband throws a party. During the party she discovers Aislabie and Sarah together. This is the wakeup call that Emilie needed, and she realises that he never loved her and the reason why Sarah never seemed to respect her is because she is his mistress. It is during the party that she takes Shales to give her father's things, and she breaks down and he conforts her, and it is then that she realises that he is the man she should have married and the man her father would have approved of eventually.

The next day she is supposed to leave for France with Aislabie as work in the house will start. Yet, Emilie refuses, and after much arguing he gies up and leaves.

I wonder what Emilie will do. Will she stop the rebuilding of the house? And how will she escape from her marriage?
