Desperate Measures - Characters

These are the characters in the book for further reference:

REGULAR CHARACTERS

  • Detective Chief Inspector Janine Lewis (40) is the main character. In a previous novel she was promoted to DCI, but her happiness about the promotion was broken when that day she discovered her husband in bed with the cleaner. Their marriage broke up as Pete moved in with her lover. Janine has four children and she has a close relationship with her partner, Richard. 
  • DI Richard Mayne is Janine Lewis’s partner. They worked together when they started their careers, and there was a night when they almost slept together, but Janine stopped as she was engaged to Peter at the time. Richard is divorced, and he openly shows his interest for Janine. Yet, in a previus novel he started dating Millie from the press office.
  • Pete Lewis is Janine’s ex-husband. He is now living with the woman he cheated on Janine with, Tina, the cleaner. He and Tina have a baby boy.
  • Tom Lewis (10) is Janine’s son. He is very cheerful and energetic, but he suffers from asthmatic attacks, which sometimes send him to the hospital.
  • Michael Lewis (19) is Janine’s eldest son. He has moved out as he is studying at university
  • Eleanor Lewis (15) is Janine’s daughter
  • Charlotte Lewis (4) is Janine’s youngest daughter.
  • Alfie Lewis is Pete's new baby boy.
  • Tina is the cleaner who Pete cheated on Janine with , and now she and Pete live together and they have a son. Tina is suffering from postnatal depression.
  • Detective Sergeant Tony Shap is one of Janine’s men in her unit.
  • Detective Sergeant Ian Butchers is one of Janine’s men in her unit. In a previous book after he overstepped the limits of his position, Janine learned that when he was a teenager, Butchers’s young brother was run over and killed, and his killer was never found. In the last book he got engaged to the woman he was dating, Kim, by mistake, and he feared he wouldn’t be able to back off. Thankfully, Shap talked to the woman and revealed that Butchers didn’t want to marry her. Kim reacted angrily, hitting Butchers, but he was relieved to get out of the dreaded situation of having to marry her.
  • DC Lisa Goodall is a constable in Janine’s team
  • Dr Susan Riley is the pathologist.
  • Detective Superintendent Louise Hogg is Janine’s boss.
  • Millie Saunders is from the press office, and he and Richard are dating.
  • John Trenton is the crime scene manager.
  • Sylvia is Janine’s nanny.
  • Detective Constable Jenny Chan is another detective in Janine’s team.

CHARACTERS IN THIS NOVEL

  • Dr Don Halliwell (64) is the doctor who is murdered in the book.
  • Roy Gant is the man who shot Dr Halliwell dead. The reason was because he thought he was responsible for his son Simon's death. After his wife's funeral Roy shoots himself in the presence of the police.
  • Simon Carter was Roy's son. He suffered from depression, and the drugs Halliwell prescribed didn't work, and Simon ended up committing suicide.
  • Adele Young is the woman who took Dr Halliwell to court because she thinks that he was to blame for her daughter's death.
  • Norma Halliwell (62) is Halliwell's wife. They met when they were studying medicine but Norma couldn't cope with her studies. It is then when she resorted to drugs, which she later admitted Don supplied for decades. Norma attempts against her life when Don dies, but Jenine saves her life, telling her that she can turn her life around. 
  • Dr Fraser McKee is one of the doctors at Halliwell's surgery and he and Halliwell didn't see eye to eye. Fraser owed money and got involved with a gang and helped them to rob the surgery. He ends up arrested. 
  • Aaron Matthews is the man whose gun killed Halliwell. He was in the Wilson Crew, but he came out of prison, intending to cut ties with the gang. When the police arrest him and then let him go, he is beaten up by the gang. Lisa advises him to enter the witness protection programme. 
  • DCS Roper is in charge of the gun crime operation.
  • Peggy Gant/Carter (60) is Roy's common law wife. Peggy and Roy met in church after he and his first wife separated. Peggy knew that Roy couldn't marry her but she was ready to forfeit his beliefs for the man she loved. Peggy dies of cancer at the beginning of the book. 
  • Marcie Young was Adele's daughter. When she hit puberty, she started using drugs, and things went from bad to worse when she started with heroin. Marcie agreed to go to her GP, Halliwell, who put her in a methadone programme. Yet, the doctor reduced the dose to half, and she started experiencing withdrawal symptoms and couldn't cope. She sneaked out of the house, and three days later she was found dead.
  • Howard Urwin is Adele's partner.
  • Nurse Dawn Langan is the surgery nurse. She was having an affair with Halliwell. 
  • Neil Langan is the nurse's husband, and when he discovers that his wife and Halliwell are having an affair, he rams his car into Halliwell's.
  • Dr Anita Gupta is another doctor in Halliwell's surgery.
  • Ms Ling is the practice manager.
  • Vicky Stonall is the practice receptionist.
  • Father McDovey is the priest who gives Peggy the last rites.
