Dying in the Wool 3 (Pages 108 - 157)

 SPOILERS!!!

Kate is not closer to finding the truth about the disappearance of Joshua Braithwaite. Yet, she has found out a few things.

Tabitha invites her to a dinner during which she is to meet Hector's relatives. During the dinner while she is outside on the porch she overhears a conversation betwen Neville and Evelyn. The man tells her that he has always had a high regard for her, and he hints that they could get married when Joshua is declared dead after the seven-year period is expired. Evelyn doesn't seem to be too enthusiastic.

Kate also gets to meet Arhur and Marjorie Wilson. From Sykes Kate knows that there was a conflict between Arthur and Joshua. Arthur created a tool for the tool, and Joshua promised to fund the patent, but it seems that nothing came out of it. Hector tells him that Arthur hits his wife, Marjorie, and almost at the end of the dinner Marjorie, visibly inebriated, tells Kate that she needs to help her escape. She almost drags Kate to her car where the driver, Anthony, is waiting and she also has her dog with her. They are driven to the house and Marjorie tells her that she will be back presently, but Anthony says that she won't be back. Kate falls asleep, and when she wakes up, Marjorie is nowhere to be seen, and Anthony drives her home.

When Kate arrives, Tabitha tells her that Paul Kellett has died. He was in the dyeroom when something got wrong, and he was killed. Kate is sorry that she didn't have time to question him because Paul seemed to be involved in the dyewares profiteering, working for Joshua. When Tabitha and Kate go to give their condolendces to his wife, Lizzie says that she is certain that her husband was murdered. She claims that someone put something in his tea, and that was why he was unable to work the machines properly.

The next person Kate wants to talk to is Dr Grainger, who looked after Joshua after his suicide attempt. She decides to leave the car and walk there, and she is surprised when on approaching she sees Evelyn and the doctor kissing. However, she waits a bit so that they do not realise that she has seen everything. When Kate talks to the doctor, he claims that he has little to say as he only treated Joshua for ten minutes and then he went missing. The doctor says that Joshua denied having tried to kill himself, but he doesn't know much. What Kate learns is that the clinic is to close soon, and the doctor has offers to work elsewhere. Dr Grainger shows Kate the painting that Joshua did of the stream and his children playing, which Tabitha told her about. Evelyn donated the painting to the clinic, but now he doesn't know what to do with it, so Kate offers to take it and she will give it to Tabitha after the wedding.

Something that Kate can't understand is Hector's silence. He was one of the boyscouts that day, but whenever Kate wants to ask him, he stalls her, and she still hasn't managed to get a word from him.

I don't have a theory yet, but I imagine that Joshua is dead - probably murdered. And what about Paul? Was he murdered as well? Why?
