New Book - The Disappearance of Stephanie Mailer by Joel Dicker (Pages 1 - 55)

 First Published: 2019

The prologue starts in 1994.

It is the start of the first Theatre Festival in Orphea, and Samuel Padalin gets worried when his wife, Meghan, doesn't return from her daily jogging session. After half an hour, he goes out to find her, and she sees her on the ground of the park. She is dead. The police arrive and opposite the park, they find the mayor's front door open, and they find the mayor, his wife and his ten-year-old son dead.

The book then takes us to 2014 when Captain Jesse Rosenberg has some celebration for his retirement. His boss calls him 100 captain because he has solved all the crimes he has been in charge of. Afterwards, a woman who introduces herself as Stephanie Mailer tells him that she should call him 99 because he failed in his first case, the quadruple murder. She tells him that the answer is before his eyes. After that, Jesse has a bee in his bonnet and starts looking into his very first case. His partner was Derek Scott, who tells him that the case was solved and the criminal caught, so he shouldn't bother himself.

Then Stephanie Mailer disappears. Her parents are worried and notified the local police, but they didn't heed them, so they turn to the state police. Jesse goes to see Chief Ron Gulliver, who tells him that there is no disappearance as they are convinced that Stephanie has gone away just like she told her boss on a message.

Jesse wants to find out more, and he goes to talk to her parents, who claim that Stephanie always told them when she was going away. However, he discovers that there are things the parents don't know like a trip to Los Angeles that Jesse saw in her credit card statement he took from her postbox. When Jesse returns to the flat with the key the parents gave him, he discovers that the flat is a shambles, and before he can realise what is happening, he is attacked.

Betsy Kanner is a deputy who has moved to the area after her divorce, and as she is on call, she goes to the site. The other deputy Montaigne doesn't appreciate her meddling, but Jesse and she work together. They discover that Stephanie told a friend about her trip to Los Angeles, but she swore her to secrecy. When no computer is found in her flat, Jesse and Betsy go to her newspaper and they find that her computer is gone. The office was broken into and the computer stolen.

Very interesting. So what did Stephani know about the 1994 murder? And is this the reason why she has disappeared?
