The Invisible Guardian - Characters


 SPOILERS!!!

These are the characters in the first book of the trilogy for further reference.

REGULAR CHARACTERS

  • Inspector Amaia Salazar (34) is the main character in the trilogy. Amaia is clever, determined and honest. She is an excellent inspector and she learnt techniques from the FBI when she did some work experience there. Amaia is married to James, who is an American sculptor, and they would like to have a child, and at the end of the novel she falls pregnant. Amaia has a traumatic background story. While growing up, she was aware that her mother hated her, and Rosario even tried to kill her when she was nine when she hit her with a matal rolling pin, put her in the kneading trough and buried her in flour. After that, the doctor told her father that she should remove her from the family home, and Amaia went to live with her Aunt Engrasi. Amaia has two sisters: Flora and Rosaura. Flora is hostile to her because she feels it is her fault that their mother is institutionalized. Rosario tried to kill a nurse when she was in hospital sick, and Amaia is convinced that Rosario thougth that the nurse was Amaia because she looked like her. 
  • James is Amaia's husband. He gets to know all the traumatic events that Amaia went through, and he is upset that she didn't tell her before. James is a sculptor. 
  • Flora Salazar is Amaia's eldest sister. She is a bitter woman who hates the fact that she had to shoulder the family business. Flora doesn't believe Amaia about what their mother did to her, and she thinks that Amaia could have done something to prevent their mother from being institutionalized. Flora is separated from Victor, her husband, and when she realises that he is the killer, she tried to find out all the information she can through Fermin, who she seduces. At the end of the book she confronts Víctor and kills him. 
  • Victor is Flora's husband and the murderer. Flora left him because he drank too much. The reason he drank was that it was the only way to control her base instincts, and when he stopped drinking to get Flora back, he started killing again. Flora kills him when she confronts him.
  • Rosaura Salazar (34) is Amaia's other sister. Rosaura used to work for Flora, but she got tired of her sister's treatment and left. Now she works in a fish factory. Rosaura is married to Freddy, but she decides to leave him because he is lazy and doesn't treat her well. Later Amaia discovers that Rosaura discovered that Freddy had cheated on her with Anna, one of the victims. 
  • Deputy Inspector Jonan Etxaide works closely with Amaia. He and Amaia get on well. 
  • Inspector Fermín Montes is another detective working with Amaia. He becomes bitter when Amaia is named the leading investigating officer. Montes has been going through a bad patch when his wife left him for another man. In the book Fermín and  Flora get together, but he discovers that she simply wanted to use him to get information about the investigation. That hurts him so much that he would have shot himself if Amaia hadn't intervened. 
  • Inspector Uriarte is from the police in Elizondo and is a great help for Amaia in the case. Uriarte is married and has children. 
  • Deputy Inspector Zabalza is from the police in Elizondo. He doesn't seem to like Amaia and he seems to get on with Fermín. Zabalza has a girlfriend, but he hides the fact that he is gay and had a relationship with his gym partner, Santy. 
  • Aunt Engrasi is Amaia's aunt. When her mother tried to kill her, Amaia went to live with Engrasi, and during the investigation she and James stay with her and Rosaura. Engrasi is a widow. When she was young, she went to Paris and studied psychology and fell in love. They got married, and Engrasi didn't even invite her relatives because she wanted to leave Elizondo and her past behind. Then he died of a heart attack, and she returned to Elizondo, intending not to leave again. Engrasi also reads the tarot.
  • Freddy Dearrain is Rosaura's husband. She had an affair with Anne, one of the victims, and unable to stand the idea of her death, he tried to commit suicide. Thankfully, a friend found him and saved his life. 
  • Rosario is Amaia's mother. We understand that she was mentally sick and her sickness made her turn against her youngest daughter. Rosario tried to kill Amaia when she cornered her in the workshop and hit her with a metal rolling pin and buried her in flour. When Rosario had Alzheimer's, she was in hospital and assaulted a nurse, biting her in the neck, and Amaia is convinced that her mother assaulted the nurse because she looked like her. Now Rosario has been locked in a mental hospital since the assault took place. 
  • Aloisius Duprée is a FBI agent in Quantico, who Amaia consults when she reaches stalemate in the investigation.
  • Dr Jorge San Martin is the local pathologist. 
  • Judge Estebánez is the judge who is involved in the case. 
  • Marisa is Zabalza's girlfriend
  • Santy used to be Zabalza's lover. He still sends him photos of himself naked even though Zabalza left him. 
  • Jean Martin is Engrasi's late husband. He was Belgian.


CHARACTERS IN THIS NOVEL

  • Ainhoa Elisasu (13) is the first victim that the police start investigating even though she is not the first girl murdered. Ainhoa missed the bus home when she was with friends, and she was worried about her parents being angry that she had broken curfew. 
  • Carla Huarte (17) is another girl who was murdered. When Ainhoa is killed, Ainhoa and her team discover that there are many elements in common with Carla's murder. 
  • Anne Arbizu (15) is the third victim. Anne led a double life. She was the perfect daughter for her parents, but behind their backs she drank, did drugs and had an affair with a married man like Freddy. 
  • Alberto Flores and Javier Gorria are the rangers who Amaia questions during the investigation.
  • Raul González and Nadia Takchenko are experts in plantigrads and help Amaia. They are married. 
  • Angel Ostoloza is Freddy's friend who finds him hanging and saves his life. 
  • Teresa Klas is one of the first victims. She was killed twenty years ago
  • Lieutenant Padua is a guardia civil and gets involved in the investigation when a girl from his area is found dead. 
  • Johana Márquez is a girl who is found dead in a hut by some children. At first, it is believed that she is another victim of the same murderer, but the differences lead them to think that this is another perpetrator. It is her stepfather who killed her when she tried to stop his advances.
  • Inés Lorenzo is Johana's mother, and she talks to Ainhoa, conviced that her husband killed Johana. 
  • Gisela is Johana's four-year-old sister.
  • Jasón Medina is Johana's killer. After the police catch him, he confesses everything. 
  • Josune Urkiza is the analyst from the Ertzaintza who analyses the flour samples and discovers that the flour used in the cakes is the same that Flora's bakery uses. 
  • Josefa Uribe was Victor's bossy mother and she got him into baking.
