New Book - Closer To Home - DI Kate Fletcher 1 - by Heleyne Hammersley (Pages 1 - 44)

 First Published: 2017

The novel starts in 1975, and a girl, Tracy, tries to prove that she is brave to her classmates who mock her. Then she gets stuck in the quarry and it seems she can't leave.

Then the action moves forward. It is 2015. A seven-year-old girl, Aleah, has gone missing, and after the police and volunteers were looking for her, the girl is found dead, floating in the pond in the quarry. DI Kate Fletcher is in charge of the investigation. Kate grew up in the town, but from the little we know something happened in the past which made Kate leave the area.

Kate and DC DAn Hollis have to tell the news to the girl's mother and stepfather. The man, Craig, says that he sent Aleah to play in the garden when he was fed up with the cartoon on the telly, and when he went to find her, she wasn't there. Hollis thinks that the stopfather is lying, and he proves he is right. After talking to Craig's father, they discover that Craig went to the bookies, and when he is brought for questioning, the man admits that he took Aleah to the bookies, and at some point he gave her some money to buy sweets, and then the girl didn't appear again.

The beginning is sad with the girl's death, but I am curious to know who killed the girl and why. Is it connected to the first chapter and how?
