This book starts in September 2009, and in the prologue we are introduced to Louisa, who is in a shed drinking herself to oblivion, and the only name she mentions is Adam.
We get to hear from Louisa again in April 1984 when she is eighteen. Louisa is the daughter of doctors, and she feels her sister Miranda is just like their parents. Yet, she is quite different as she enjoys a more liberal life, drinking, going out with boys, and instead of going to university she decides to start working in a market stall, selling aromatic herbs, which her parents disapprove of.
In September 2009 we are also introduced to Paul, who is 17 and is in police custody. During the interrogation we discover that Paul and a friend Daniel are accused of hurting a man, Ken Hillyard, and one of the police officers tells Paul that they know he didn't do anything, so he needs to tell the truth about that night and Daniel. It seems that Paul is afraid of Daniel and someone called Carl, but he eventually does as the police tell him. Then the police arrange for him to go a safe place near Leamington Spa, where he can start life again.
