New Book - One, Two, Buckle My Shoe - Hercule Poirot 24 - by Agatha Christie (Pages 1 - 35)

First Published: 1940

Henry Morley is a dentist who lives with his sister, and this morning he is complaining about everything, especially as his secretary, Gladys, has been called to her aunt's side because she has had a stroke. Morley thinks that Gladys has made up this as a way to spend the day with her unsuitable boyfriend, Frank Carter.

Morley's day is busy. His patients include a rich banker, Alistair Blunt, a foreign new patient, Mr Amberiotis, and a lady, Miss Sainsbury Seale. Poirot also goes to his surgery that morning because he has to have three fillings. Morley tells him about how Alistair Blunt is always punctual, and how he always remembers faces, and recently there was a patient he recognised but didn't remember his name.

Later that day Poirot receives a phone call from Inspector Japp. Morley has been found dead and it seems to be suicide. Poirot goes back to the surgery, and he tells Japp that Morley didn't seem upset or anything, and he has problems thinking that he wanted to kill himself. The alternative is murder, and the problem is what the motive could be.

Poirot and Japp want to question the patients Morley had, especially Mr Amberiotis, who was the last one before his body was found. They also want to question Reilly, Morley's partner, and Alfred, the pageboy. Then Gladys appears, saying that the telegram she received about her aunt having a stroke was a hoax, and her aunt is completely fine. It seems that someone wanted to remove her from Morley's office for some reason.
