SPOILERS!!!
- Lady Vespasia Cumming- Gould. Here we find Lady Vespasia as a young woman. She is in her early thirties, and in this novella we learn that even though she and her husband have a good marriage, she is not really in love with him. He spends too much time away. We also discover that she had a love story with an Italian man, Mario Corena, during the Italian revolution when she was there.
- Omegus Jones is the owner of the big house where Lady Vespasia is invited to spend a long weekend. Omegus is the one to come up with the idea of asking Isobel some kind of action to expiate her misdeeds.
- Gwendolen Kilmuir (28) is the young widow who commits suicide at Applecross. Gwendolen lost her husband a year ago, and she was ready to start life again, and she was willing to have a new husband. The chosen one was Bertie Rosythe. When Isobel threw a caustic remark about her just wanting his money, Gwendolen was very upset. She was discovered in the lake the next day, and everybody thougth that she had killed herself because of Isobel's comment. Vespasia discovers after she and Isobel travel to see Gwendolen's mother that Gwendolen killed her husband, and it was guilt that maust have pushed her to commit suicide.
- Isobel Alvie (30) is the woman who was cruel to Gwendolen, and everybody at Applecross thought that she was to blame for Gwndolen's suicide. She eventually agreed to travel to Scotland and confess to Gwendolen's mother. Isobel is also a widow and lost her husband eight years ago, and she was jealous of Gwendolen.
- Mrs Beatrice Naylor is Gwendolen's mother.
- Bertie Rosythe is the man who Gwendolen Kilmuir is keen on, and she thinks he is going to propose to her.
- Lord Ernest Salchester is one of the guests at Applecross.
- Lady Salchester is his wife.
- Sir John Warburton is one of the guests at Applecross.
- Lady Evely Worburton is his wife and the one who is more vocal in her criticism of Isobel. ç
- Fenton Twyford is one of the guests at Applecross.
- Blanche Twyford is his wife.
- Peter Hanning is an eligible bachelor who is also a guest.
