REGULAR CHARACTERS
- Gabriel Araceli (17) is the narrator and main character. He was born in Cadiz and his mother was the only person who cared for him. There was also an uncle who was very cruel. When his mother died, Gabriel ran to Medina Sidonia where he met Don Alonso and Doña Francisca, who hired him as a page, and he was happy with them. Gabriel was in love with their daughter, Rosita, but he was disappointed when she fell for someone else. Gabriel was with his master in the Battle of Trafalgar at the age of fourteen and saw too many horrors. After Trafalgar Gabriel went to Madrid where he came to serve an actress, Pepita González. After Pepita he has started to work in the printing press of the Diario de Madrid. He is in love with Inés, and when she is forced to live with some cruel cousins, he enters to their service and tries to release her from their hold. These are tumultuous times and Gabriel ends up in prison and sentened to death.
- Inés (16) is the girl who Gabriel is in love with. Inés worked with her mother, Juana, a seamstress, but then Juana died. Inés moved to live with her uncle, the priest in Aranjuez where he was given a post. Inés was not doña Juana's real daughter, but the daughter Amaranta gave up when she was very young. In this book she is forced to live with her cousins when they discover that she is the daughter of a rich woman, and don Mauro intends to marry her. When she refuses, she is locked in her room, but Gabriel manages to release her. Then when they are caught in the 2 May uprising, Inés is arrested with Celestino, and Gabriel tries to set her free. What he manages is to get arrested himself, and it is Juan de Dios, who is in love with Inés, and Lobo who get her out of prison.
- Padre Celestino Santos del Melvar is Inés's uncle. At the end of the book Celestino is in prison alongside Gabriel, expecting to be executed.
- Juan de Dios is the shop assistant working for the Requejos. He was engaged to Doña Restituta but when he meets Inés, he falls for her. So he helps Gabriel to get her out of the house, and he is the one who achieves her release from prison.
- Pacorro Chinitas is a scissor grinder who Gabriel befriends and whose advice he takes in great regard. He was married to a woman called 'La Primorosa' but he abandoned her because she was terrible to him. In this book he dies during the 2 May uprising.
- Amaranta is one of the women that Pepita, Gabriel's former mistress, was friends with. Gabriel discovered that as a young woman she fell in love with a young man who her family disapproved. Amaranta got pregnant and had a baby who she gave up. Gabriel suspects that she may be Ines's real mother.
- La Primorosa is Pacorro's wife. She is very passionate and determined.
CHARACTERS IN THIS NOVEL
- Mauro Requejo is Ines's cousin, and he comes to see her because he wants to take her in. Mauro has ulterior motives to want to help Ines. He has discovered that she is the daughrer of a rich woman, and he wants to marry him.
- Restituta Requejo is Mauro's sister, and she is a miser. All she cares about is money and economise.
- Gorito Santurrias is Celestino's sexton. He is a widower and has several children. Celestino does not like him because he is one of the men against Godoy. It is Santurrias who reports Celestino for his support to Godoy.
- Sr Lopito was the cook in El Escorial, and in this book he serves Don Antonio Pascual. He takes part in the Tumult of Aranjuez and the 2 May uprising.
- Pedro Collado is the servant of Prince Fernando.
- Sr Malayerba owns the inn in Aranjuez where the uprisers meet.
- Mariminguilla works in Malayerba's inn.
