SPOILERS!!!
The new maid replacing Ethel is Lillian, a very young girl, who has never known anywhere else than her home. She is shy and insecure, and Cook daunts her. She also needs to learn almost everything, and feeling out of her depth, she cries herself to sleep every night. When Ada hears her one night, she begins to offer her kindness and help her. After that, Lillian starts settling down at the Elms, and when she visits her family, she realises how lucky she is to have landed that position as house maid.
Edward continues visiting Elise every week, and it is not surprising when Elise hints that he comes to see her not simply as a client. Edward tries to convince himself and her that they are just friends. He loves his wife, but even though the logical thing would be to stop seeing Elise, he knows he can't make do without these moments with her. I am afraid that there will be a point when what has not happened yet will happen, and this will be the moment of no return. I find Edward's attitude sad, and I am afraid what this friendship will mean for his family in the future.
During one of the meetings of the Northcote committee Beattie knows Mrs Dawson, who offers her work as a volunteer in a London station canteer to supervise the accounts as she proves to know about money and how to deal with it. Beattie aaccepts the job.
As things at the front intensify, Mrs Cuthbert tells her that the government want her to extend the farm and bring in more horses. That will mean that more voluntary girls will be needed, and they will stay in her big house. What the woman says is that this is viable as long as Sadie is there to help her, and Sadie does not hesitate to show her willingness.
One of the friends that Bobby has befriended in the flying training centre, Porker, goes on a solo flight and crashes the plane and dies. That hits Bobby hard because he was fond of him. The next day Bobby and his other friend, Farringdon are tranferred to another camp where they will join the squadron.
