The Ruin 5 - The End (Pages 229 - end)

 RATING: SUPERB

SPOILERS!!!

This was a great read and it surprised me.

The ending comes when Maude is arrested for the murder of her mother twenty years ago, and at the same time the body of Lorna, Daniel's sister, is found, and one of the men accused of raping her years ago is arrested.

Aisling feels that she needs to do something to find out what really happened to Jack. So thanks to her friend Mary, she discovers that she can tell where he was that day through Google's timeline. So she discovers that he was in a place where he went to think. There she sees divers and what she sees is the body of Lorna being fished out of the lake. Then she finds Jack's mobile, and she decides to take it to the police station as she can't make it start. It is Danny that she finds and hands it to.

Cormac has been suspecting Danny, and when through Maude, who has been released on bail, he learns that Aisling went to the police station with Jack's mobile phone, he fears she may be in danger. When he arrives at Aisling's flat, he finds her tied and a noose around her neck. Danny has placed her on the staircase, and he is behind her. Any movement would cause her death, but Aisling decides to fight him, and she jumps from the staircase, and Cormac shoots Danny and runs to save Aisling. She is only left with a few injuries but she has a miscarriage.

When Cormac goes to see Danny's parents, his mother still believes in her son's innocence, but his father, actually his stepfather tells Cormac everything. Danny was a illegitimate child, and his mother left him in an orphanage, and when she met Danny's stepfather, they married and took Danny out of the orphanage. From the first moment the man saw that there was something wrong with Danny: He was prone to angry outbursts and he had many problems at school with the other children. James was reluctant to have a child because he was afraid that Danny would treat the child wrong. So when Danny left home, they had Lorna, but Danny was not good to her. Then when she was raped, he went out of his way to catch the men, even planting drugs. Yet, the charges were dropped. And illogically as it sounds, now he killed his own sister to accuse the men who had raped her of her murder. Jack saw him kill Lorna, and he killed Jack.

In the course of the investigation Cormac also discovers that Maude had reasons to kill her mother. The woman who came home brought a paedophile and Maude was afraid for Jack, so knowing that her mother did not have long to live, she bought the heroine from Tom's sister, who even taught her how to inject her. Cormac realises that she was a child and only wanted to procted her brother. In any case, there is no evidence that Maude used the drugs on her mother, and at the trial she claims that she bought it for herself.

Cormac finally gets the evidence throught the dog ends thrown by Timothy Lanigan that he was the killer of the girl in America and it will be difficult to prove he also killed Maura Hughes as her body was never found, but he will go to prison anyway.

The book also explains that Domenica Keane died through an intoxication of gas coming from her radiator.

This was a great read and will be looking for other novels featuring Cormac.
