The Ruin - Characters


 SPOILERS!!!

These are the characters in the series for further reference:

REGULAR CHARACTERS
  • DS Cormac Reilly (40) is a detective and has spent almost all his working life in Dublin. Yet, he requested his transfer to Galway because his partner had to move to Galway for a project. 
  • Garda James Rodgers is the policeman in charge of the case of Jack's suicide. He is not very helpful to Maude. 
  • DS Anthony Healy is a garda in Galway, and he seemed to have had a conflict with Danny McIntyre. 
  • Emma is Cormac's partner. She is a biologist and has an important project to develop at university. 
  • Sergeant Melanie Hacket is another detective and she and Danny don't see eye to eye. Melanie helps Cormac to uncover the truth about Danny. Melanie knew that Danny mistreated his wife, and that is the origin of their conflict. 
  • Brian Murphy is the superintendent. 
  • Liam Hearne is a former garda, who is now retired. Danny and Cormac worked with him, and when Cormac first arrives in Galway, Danny tells him that he has a drinking problem. The truth is that Liam knows things about Danny that he didn't want Cormac to know.
  • David Murray is another garda at the station. He is the son of the superintendent. 
  • Peter Fisher is another garda who helps Cormac in Maura Hughes's cold case. 
  • Sergeant Carrie O'Halloran is Danny's boss.
  • Matt is a friend of Cormac's who works for the Interpol.
CHARACTERS IN THIS BOOK

  • Jack Blake (25) is the young man who is thought to have committed suicide. Jack was the little boy who Cormac found with his sister and his dead mother, and then he brought him to the hospital. After that, he was adopted
  • Danny McIntyre is a garda and he and Cormac trained together. Danny is the person who killed Jack because he saw Danny kill his sister, Lorna. Cormac kills him when he tries to murder Aisling.
  • Sara McIntyre is Danny's wife.

  • Maude Blake (35) is Jack's sister. After her mother died she called the  police and when her brother was taken care of, she left. Maude ended up in Australia where she worked in a cattle station, and after her boss died, she returned to Ireland. Maude is convinced that her brother didn't commit suicide, and when she presses the police to continue investigating, she is arrested for the murder of her mother. It can't be proved but the truth is that Maude was afraid for her brother, so since her mother had little to live, she bought heroin from her friend Tom's sister, and injected enough for her mother to die. This is what Danny discovers, but it can't be proved that she used it on her mother.
  • Hilaria Blake was Jack and Maude's mother and died twenty years ago. She was an alcoholic and was dying of liver cirrhosis. Yet, the police found her dead wiht a syringe stuck in her arm. The truth is that Maude sped her death when she supplied heroin to her because she was afraid that her brother could be the victim of a paedophile who a woman who helped her motehr had brought. 
  • Aisling Conroy is Jack's partner. She is a doctor, and the day Jack died she told him that she was pregnant. A baby was not good news as she had plans to become a surgeon and a pregnancy would spoil her plans. Aisling found Jack's phone after she discovered where she had been, she handed it in at the police station, and Danny McIntyre tried to kill her. Thankfully,  Cormac appeared and she could save her life, but she lost the baby she was carrying.
  • Tom Collins (35) is Maude's friend. He is a solicitor, but while he grew up, he went from family to family.
  • Hannah Collins is Tom's sister. She is in prison because her last boyfriend got her involved in a scan. Now she is clean, and during her time in prison she had a baby girl, and she is allowed to have her for a year. Yet, she is worried about what will happen to her baby afater that first year, so when Danny comes to visit her, she uses the information she has about Maude to get an early release. What she tells Danny is that twenty years ago Maude bought heroin from her.
  • Dominica Keane is the horrible woman who spent a great deal of time with Hilaria. She also employed Maude in her farm. Dominica dies at the end of the book.
  • Simon Schiller is the paedophile who Dominica brought to the house twenty years ago.
  • Mary Dooley is Aisling's friend and colleague. 
  • Brendan is Jack's adopted father.
  • Aggie is Jack's adopted mother.
  • Maura Hughes is a young woman who disappeared in the 1980s. Suspicion fell on a teacher, but no evidence was found. Cormac discovers that the teacher was suspected of killing another woman in America where he moved to. Now he and Fisher manage to get DNA and the teacher is proved guilty.
  • Timothy Lanigan is the teacher who was accused of killing Maura Hughes, and Cormac finally proves that he is definitely the murderer of another girl who he was also a teacher of. 
  • Lorna McIntyre was Danny's sister. When she disappeared, her aunt, who Lorna was living with, reported the disappearance to the police, but Danny claimed that Lorna did this thing frequently. The reality is that Danny killed his own sister because he wanted the men who raped her a few years ago sentenced for her death.
  • Caroline is Lorna's aunt.
  • Katherine Shelley is an ex social worker who was involved with the Blakes.
  • John Lawton was Maude's employer at the station in Australia. 
  • Aengus Barton is the farmer accused of raping Lorna, and when Lorna's body is found near his farm, he is arrested.
  • Jim Kavannagh is the other man accused of raping Lorna.
  • James McIntyre is Danny's stepfather. He tells Cormac that Danny was always a difficult boy when he grew up, and his behaviour was not just childish, but something more serious.
  • Anne McIntyre is Danny's mother.
