Northanger Abbey - Facts

Part of this novel takes place in Bath, which is a city in Somerset.

Catherine mentions the places she goes to in Bath. One is the upper rooms. Bath society was served by two sets of Assembly Rooms, the Lower Rooms and the New or Upper Rooms.

The lower rooms, built in 1708, were Located on Terrace Walk near beautiful South Parade off the banks of the Avon River. The lower rooms were used during the day for promenading and visiting and at night for dancing. Beautiful stone walks and terraces surrounded the building, which encouraged people to gather to see and be seen, and dawdle away a few pleasant hours.

The Grand Pump Room is a historic building in the Abbey Churchyard, Bath.

Catherine loves gothic novels, and she is specially fond of Udolpho by Mrs Radcliffe. The Mysteries of Udolpho is a Gothic romance novel by Ann Radcliffe, which appeared in four volumes on 8 May 1794. Her fourth and most popular novel, The Mysteries of Udolpho tells of Emily St. Aubert, who suffers misadventures that include the death of her mother and father, supernatural terrors in a gloomy castle, and machinations of Italian brigand Signor Montoni. It is often cited as an archetypal example of the Gothic novel.

Catherine is thrilled when Isabella's brother, John, tells her that they can go to  Blaize Castle. Blaise Castle is a folly built in 1766 near Henbury in Bristol.

One of the carriages they use in the novel is a curricle. A curricle is a light two-wheeled carriage drawn by two horses abreast.
