Kirstie used to work as a singer on a boat when she met Jon, who also worked there. He is a drama director, so he suggested she be in his pantomime in the village of Newbay. They also started an affair. Jon is somehow derisive of Kirstie's weight, making jokes about her in mixed company, and that makes her uncomfortable. Kirstie is worried about playing Cinderella in the pantomime of the Newbay Theatre Society as she is a stranger in the village, and she wonders whether she will be accepted. Jon has brought together the rest of the cast: Lauren Whitwell, who reads the news in the local TV and usually plays the main roles, has been cast as Prince Charming; George and Andrew Giggle will be the ugly stepsisters; Annelle Sweeting will be the wicked stepmother; Vince Churchill will be Cinderella's father; Bernie Churchill will be the fairy godmother; and Trevor Fernlea, the committee chairman, will be Buttons, Cinderella's friend.
In Newbay Ben Teesdale, his eight-year-old daughter Thea, and his mother Judy live. Ben is a widower, and when he lost his wife to breast cancer three years ago, he moved to be near his mother and opened his new business. His worry is Thea, who seems unable to befriend the children at school. Thea is clumsy and a bookworm, and these three years have been hard for her. Judy suggests Thea should join some activities outside school, but Ben doesn't know how he is going to find the time to do that.
This is an interesting start, and I can't wait how it will pan out.
