RATING: OKAY
SPOILERS!!!
I have to say that most of the book is intriguing and unputdownable, but I am not so fond of the ending. I think that the end was a bit disappointing for my taste.
The revelation comes when Annette Collins, the daughter of the secretary who reported Dale missing, calls Fletcher to tell him that he has something to give him. She is giving a concert, and even though Fletcher should have informed his colleagues and superiors, he goes alone. Annette shows him a tin box after she tells him that her mother had a box with things that belonged to Dale. In the tin box there is a mummified ear, and Fletcher is shocked. The next day he sends the ear to be tested, and again without informing anyone, he goes to talk to Hazel on his own. Surprisingly, Hazel is alone now and quite coherent. What Hazel tells him is that Dale's half-brother was one of the people who Dale cheated out of his money. It was him who killed Dale and buried his body, and then he told Hazel, urging her to take the money and report him missing. Hazel was pregnant and needed the money, so she did as she was told. The murderer, Terry, is dead now, and we discover that he killed Scott and Charlie when they saw him.
It is then that Danny, his partner, calls him. They have information about Terry and are on their way to talk to Hazel. Fletcher panics because he shouldn't be there, and he tries to escape but he has an accident is called. Fletcher is now facing charges, especially as Danny has decided to tell everything he knows about Fletcher's underhand behaviour. Besides, the police found Hazel dead, and he is questioned about it. I am not sure about what happened to Hazel, and the novel doesn't clarify this point.
Cody Swift finishes his podcast, announcing that there will be a new channel about reality TV, and the publicity appears in the sky, showing on dozens of hot air balloons. Jess, who has returned from Morocco sooner than planned, because Erica was nowhere to be found, and she was eventually found with her boyfriend, Olly, at a concert. Jess realises that everything that Cody did was a stunt for publicity, and he was never interested in finding out the truth. What she realises is that Cody and Felix were in cahoots, and she feels like a fool. Then she remembers something. So she goes to Cody's office, and she reveals that she remembers seeing him in his football T-shirt near the dog track, which means that he saw his two friends being killed and he didn't do anything to save Sid. Then Jess reveals that she will appear on BBC, talking about the crimes, and it is being on now.
I have to say that the end was not to my liking. I can't understand why Jess did everything to stop the investigation just because she had an abortion that night. And I can't see the sense of Felix's character.
