The Birds and Other Stories - The Birds - Facts

The book mentions many different types of birds, and these are the ones I am not familiar with:

Jackdaws are birds closely related to, but generally smaller than, crows and ravens.

The common starling is a highly gregarious species, especially in autumn and winter.

Finches are small to medium-sized birds. Finches generally have stout conical bills adapted for eating seeds and nuts and often have colourful plumage.

Larks are small to medium-sized birds that reside in open countryside from desert to alpine tundra.

The oystercatchers are a group of waders which are found on coasts worldwide apart from the polar regions and some tropical regions of Africa and South East Asia.

The common redshank is a widespread breeding bird across temperate Eurasia. It is a migratory species, wintering on coasts around the Mediterranean.

The sanderling is a small wading bird.

The curlews are birds, characterised by their long, slender, downcurved bills and mottled brown plumage.

The brambling is a migratory bird, often seen in very large flocks.

Thrushes are plump, soft-plumaged, small to medium-sized birds, inhabiting wooded areas, and often feeding on the ground.

Gannets are large white birds with yellowish heads, black-tipped wings and long bills.
