The Birds and Other Stories - The Birds - Daphne Du Maurier

First Published: 1952

RATING: VERY GOOD

SPOILERS!!!

Nat Hocken has been working on Mr Trish's farm after being left disabled during the war. While working in the field, he notices that there are birds which shouldn't be flying at this time of the year. That night when he is sleeping next to his wife, he wakes when he hears some noises outside his window. When he checks, a bird attacks him, but he manages to close the window. Then the children start crying, and he discovers lots of birds in the children's bedroom. After getting the children into his, he manages to kill fifty birds.

The next day he goes to the farm but Mrs Trih thinks that he is talking nonsense. When he returns home, his wife tells him that she has heard that there are thousands of birds everywhere attacking people. Nat manages to prepare the house to protect his family, and that night the birds attack again but he is ready. He realises that the birds only attack when the tide is in because there is no food. So he uses the time when the tide is out, and when he goes to the farm, he discovers Mr and Mrs Trish have been killed by the birds, but he doesn't tell his wife or the children. And he takes everything they need for the house.

The last part of the story is the family in the house but it seems that the end may be near for them.

I had never read The Birds and I have never seen the film, and I think that even though the story is quite frightening, I really enjoyed it.
