Mother's Boy 2 (Pages 31 - 85)

 SPOILERS!!!

In 1918 Laura and Charlie start courting and they marry, but he goes to war just after the wedding. Laura has to leave the Frasers and moves back with her mother, and she earns her money by doing laundry. Her mother dies suddenly. During the years of the war Charlie has leave only a few times. When she fails to get pregnant, she feels down in the dumps. On his last leave Laura finally gets pregnant. During her pregnancy she writes to her husband, expressing her happiness. Then she receives a letter from a nurse, telling her that Charlie suffered an attack of mustard gas and is being invalided out. Some weeks later Laura gets a telegram, notifying that her brother Stanley has died.

Laura gives birth to a boy who she calls Charles. This is the young man who in 1941 is on a ship during the war. Charles becomes his father's shadow. Charlie has TB and suffers from short of breath, fever and can't do much. Charles loves his dad but knows that his father is not like other dads. And then Charlie dies, and Laura is worried because Charles hasn't shown much pain.

At school Charles stands out because he is very intelligent, and Laura is afraid other children may bully him. She is right when one day he appears with a swollen eye and his glasses broken, but Charles says that he simply fell on his way back home from school.
