New Book - Mother's Boy by Patrick Gale (Pages 1 - 31)

First Published: 2023

The book starts in 1941.
Charles Causley is on a ship in the Atlantic. He is a decoder, and when a message comes to the telegraph room, he rushes to the bridge. Almost at once the ship is attacked and Charles tries to help, but then another torpedo hits the ship and he falls.
The book goes back in time. In 1914 Laura Bartlett works as a maid for the Frasers. It is a good job after growing up very poor. One day when the Frasers are visiting some friends and it is the cook's day off, a man comes bringing a boy. He explains that he helps the doctor, and the boy appeared before the carriage and they had no time to stop. Dr Butler comes next, and he takes care of the boy and tells Laura and his assistant, Charlie, to take the boy home. They do, and Charlie asks Laura to meet him on her day off, and Laura accepts the invitation.
This is my first book by this author, and I like his style and how he describes the characters and the period.
