SPOILERS!!!
These are the characters for further reference:
- Henry Broad (59) is one of the main characters. He worked in documentaries, directing them, but his producing company decided to get rid of it.
- Laura Broad is Henry's wife. They have two grown-up children: Carrie and Jack. Laura works as an agent and specialises in libraries.
- Carrie Broad (24) is Henry and Laura's daughter. Her aspiration to compose and sing her own music. Carrie returns home because she is depressed but after spending time with her family she decides to start living independently.
- Aster Dickinson (86) dies in the book. Her daughter is Liz. Aster has always been a very difficult person to deal with. Her husband, Rex, left her when Liz was very young, and for Aster life stopped there, and her difficult character comes from the bitter experiences he had in life.
- Liz Dickinson (47) is Aster's daughter. She has always had a difficult relationship with her mother, and in this book when her mother is dying in bed, she feels impatient, wanting for the end to come. It seems that there is a silent agreement between her and hte nurses to help Aster to die. Liz lives with her partner, Alan, and they have a child, Cas. Liz also has a grown-up daughter, Alice.
- Alan Strachan is a script writer. In this book he runs into an old girlfriend and decides he wants to sleep with her, but he doesn't want to lose Liz. He and Annie have sex and he tells Liz, who is angry, but they reconcile at the end of the book.
- Alice Dickinson is Liz's daughter, adn she lives in London with Jack, her boyfriend. Alice's father is Guy, who in the first book of the series we learns is the son of Pam, the daughter of Kitty, whose story we read in the first book.
- Cas (13) is Liz and Alan's son.
- Rex Dickson is Liz's father, whoabandoned her and her mother when she was a child.
- Annie Hamer/Munro is the old girlfriend Alan has a fling with.
- Jack Broad is Harry and Laura's son. He lives in London with Alice, his girlfriend. Jack is a teacher.
- Stuart is Alan's boss
- Guy Caulder is Alice's father. He and Liz used to be married, but he was irresponsible and couldn't be trusted. Guy is Pam's son.
- Mitchell Hamer is Annie's husband. When Annie is about to tell him what happened between her and Alan, he tells her that he has had an affair with a colleague for three years.
- Ellie Hamer is Annie and Mitch's daughter.
- Franco is Ellie's boyfriend.
-Kieran Kelly is Cas's new friend. He used to bully him, but after he discovered what Cas's father did for a living, he decided he wanted to be like him and he became a good friend to Cas.
