Holy Island 3 (Pages 76 - 137)

 SPOILERS!!

Ryan finds Megan's body on the roof of the pub. There are some similarities to Lucy's murder in the way her body was left and killed, but there are also differences. She was also strangled, but her throat was also slashed with a serrated knife. There are symbols and marks on her body similar to those found on Lucy's. And the way the body was left shows that it was not so tidily arranged.

When Ryan learns that there is a link between Alex and Megan, he thinks he has a suspect. Alex and Megan had a relationship. Actually, years ago Alex and Anna were an item, but Alex left her for Megan after Anna found her sister and boyfriend in bed. That is what prompted Anna to leave the island. Yet, the relationship did not last. What makes Ryan suspicious is that Alex didn't tell him about Lucy and didn't say anything about his past history with Megan either.

When the police find Lucy's mobile and some of her clothes in Alex's shed, he claims he doesn't know why it is there, but he is arrested. Since the tide is out, Alex has to remain under custody in Ryan's house. When Ryan goes to talk to Anna, she says that it is true that Alex is a philanderer, but he is incapable of murder.

That night there is a conversation between someone who is referred to as the high priest and Rob Fowler, one of the coast guard volunteers. Rob says that he saw the person who killed Lucy transport her to the priory. The other man says that it is a sacrifice that this man did for the welfare of the community. It seems that these two men among others belong to some secret pagan group. Rob says that it is not fair that Alex is blamed for something he did not do. From the other man's thoughts we understand that it was him who killed Megan. So this means that one man killed Lucy and this other one killed Megan.

This high priest thinks Rob is right and he needs to do something. The next day Mike, the island's vicar, runs to Ryan, saying that he has found a dead person but he can't identified because his face is gone. Ryan and Phillips go to the site where a bonfire was burning the night before, and they find the man there, and they identify him as Rob Fowler. This means that the other man killed him. Now the police have to outweigh the evidence against Alex, and he can't have killed Rob.

This plot is getting more and more interesting. I wonder who the killers are. Megan mentioned to her lover that he had money, so my suspicion falls on Mark, the historian who lives on the island and is friends with Anna. He must be the high priest who killed Megan and Rob. But who killed Lucy? Could it have been Pete, who knew her since his schooldays? I don't think Alex is guilty of any of the crimes.
