Holy Island 2 (Pages 24 - 76)

 SPOILERS!!!

Anna Taylor is a history professor in Durham University, and Gregson requires her help in understanding why Lucy was left in that position. Besides, Anna grew up on Holy Island, and her sister is still there. There is a tragic story for the sisters. Their father, who was the pub landlord, was a violent drunk, and rumours circulated that he hit his daughters and wife. Then one day Sarah Taylor, the mother, was found dead at the foot of the stairs. Some said that he had killed her after finding her with another man. A few days later he killed himself by jumping from a cliff. The daughters discovered that the pub was heavily mortgaged and there were lots of debts. They sold the pub to the barman, Bill, on condition Megan could live in the flat above the pub and work there.

Ryan meets Anna at the same time as Megan Taylor. When Anna introduces herself, he tells her that he thanks her but he won't need her help, which does not sit well with her. Then he questions Megan, who confirms that Lucy was in the pub the night before with her friends, and they left around eleven. Megan is flirtatious and very different to Anna, but it is Anna who has made a big impression on Ryan.

The medical report shows the first results. Lucy died strangled, and it is likely that her murderer was a man with enough strength to carry her. It seems that she was killed somewhere else, and then she was carried to the priory.

That night Ryan goes to the pub again. Pete, who volunteers as a coast guard, is behind the bar, and he explains that he is just a volunteer, but he works in the bup and helping his mother in her hotel. What Ryan learns is that Alex, one of the coast guards, was seeing Lucy, but he has not said a word about it. Alex is also in the pub, and Ryan asks him to talk to him in private. Alex then tells him that he and his wife Kim are separate, and he went to Newcastle to beg her to sort out things, but she sent him packing. In a pub he ran into Lucy, who was a student at Newcastle University, and she confessed that she had always had a crush on him, and that was the beginning of their fling. They saw each other in Newcastle, but Alex didn't want anybody to know because that would complicate his divorce. When he saw her the night before, he told her that they needed to stop seeing each other because of the divorce. Alex swears to Ryan that he didn't saw her again that night.

While this is happening in the pub, Megan is in her flat with a man. The man is not named, but the conversation between them is tense. It is obvious that they are in some kind of relationship, and Megan has hoped to marry him because he is rich, but he doesn't want to. Now Megan tells her that if he won't marry her, he should give her enough money to start anew somewhere else. Or else she will tell everybody about them. It seems that he is not pleased at all.

Ryan decides to go and find Megan as he needs to ask her more questions. She bumps into Anna on the stairs, who is also on her way to see Megan. The sisters have drifted apart, and this is the first time in years Anna has seen her. Both Ryan and Anna climb the stairs and when they knock at the door, Megan doesn't answer even though they can hear the television. Afraid for her, Anna fetches the key from Bill, and when they open the door, they are shocked to find the whole place covered in blood, but Megan is nowhere to be seen. So Ryan calls his colleagues, who have gone home, to come back because they have another investigation.

Ryan walks Anna to the cottage and when she starts crying, he comforts her and they end up kissing. Yet, Ryan reacts and pulls away, apologising, and Anna does not like that and reacts angrily.

This is getting more and more interesting. Who is Lucy's killer? And is Lucy dead? Is the man who she tried to blackmail Lucy's killer?
