The Yacht Party 2 (Pages 36 - 232)

 SPOILERS!!!

Even though Sandrine's parents tell Lara that their daughter fought against depression for years, Lara can't believe that her death was suicide. What she remembers is that Sandrine told her that she was investigating the death of a financer, called Jonathon Meyer, and she mentioned trafficking. Lara goes to the conference of the Caché, the investigation corporation, and she meets Eduardo and Stefan, who is the cofunder of the Caché. Lara states her intention, and the two men seem to support her.

Next Lara talks to Jonathon's brother, Simon, and the man gives him the name of the person who is in charge of Jonathon's yacht, from which he seemed to run things. Next Lara goes to find her former PA, Stella, who after her dismissal is working in a café, and as soon as Lara tells her about working on this investigation, Stella dumps the job and their first stop is France, where they go to Sandrine's flat, and they find a post-it with three names, Jonathon, Michael and Helen. The strange thing is that Sandrine usually had postits everywhere as well as photographs of the stories she was investigating, but there is nothing now and her computer is gone. Lara thinks that someone has been to the flat and removed things.

Lara then goes to Monaco, where he talks to Tom, who looks after the yacht, but the man doesn't give him too much information, and he tells her to talk to Melissa, who supplied girls for the parties Jonathon throw on his yacht. Melissa has little information to give, but she tells Lara that Jonathon had a run-in with one of his guests, Jago, who he threw out of the yacht.

In Monaco Alex, her former colleague and best friend, is. From the comments Sandrine made about Alex, she was convinced that Lara was in love with Alex, but she denied it. Alex is now dating Alice, who is ambitious and aspires to higher position in her life. When Alex and Lara meet in Monaco, they have a row when Alex disapproves of what Lara is doing, and she walks away.

In Monaco Lara has the surprise of finding Eduardo and Stephan, and she tells them what she has found out. Eduardo leaves Stephan and Lara alone, and she feels drawn to him, and they end up kissing and in Lara's room.

Back in London Lara gets the contact of someone called Josie, who she arranges to meet. Josie says that she and Jonathon were dating. Josie is a model and was with Jonathon for six months. What Josie says is that she is afraid. She tells her about a cobalt mine which Jonathon owned, and there was talk that children were used as labour, which worried Jonathon. Josie also tells her that once she overheard a conversation between Jonathon and someone called Mike, who asked Jon to get rid of someone, and Josie thinks that the man meant killing that person. The man reminded Jonathon that he owed him everything.

When Lara goes to see Simon, Jonathon's brother, and she asks him if he knows someone in Jonathon's circle, called Mike, and Simon tells him that she must mean Mike Nash, a financier thanks to whom Jonathon started in business. Simon gets upset when Lara mentions the connection between Jonathon, and the rumours about him using children as labour for the cobalt mine. He says that he doesn't want her to dig any more if it means soiling his brother's reputation.

Stella investigates Mike Nash, and she thinks she has found Helen, the thrid name in the piece of paper. Mike's wife, Victoria, runs a charity, and someone called Helen was killed in a hit-and-run when she was volunteering for the charity in Haiti. Lara and Stella contact Helen's parents in Edinburgh and go to see them. The couple are still upset and think that the police did not help them to find out who had killed their daughter, and the woman, Callie Groves, blames Helen's best friend, Rebecca, who was the one who came up with the idea of taking a gap year and go to Haiti. Ian Groves, the father, shows Lara Helen's last email which told them that she was planning to return soon as things were getting complicated. The Groves don't know what she meant what complications she meant. That email was sent just a few days before she was killed. Lara wants to talk to Rebecca, and Callie tells her that she didn't even come to the funeral, and now she is gone. Ian tells Lara that he thinks Rebecca is in Ullapool, where her aunt has a guest house. So this is the next stop for Lara.

I imagine that Helen had an affair with Mike. That is what Mike's last PA hinted at Stella when she talked to the woman. So maybe Helen became a problem and Mike got her killed, and Jonathon helped him??
