One, Two, Buckle My Shoe 2 (Pages 35 - 106)

 SPOILERS!!!

When Poirot and Japp go to talk to Mr Amberiotis, the last man to be treated by Morley, they are told that the man is dead. The next day Japp calls Poirot, saying that they have the motive for Morley's suicide. Amberiotis died of an overdose of the drug injected by the dentist, and having realised what he had done, Morley decided to kill himself. Japp finds the explanation right, but Poirot has his doubts and continues investigating.

One thing that throws him is the disappearance of Mabelle Sainsbury Seale. The woman left one evening and hasn't seen since, and all her things and clothes are there.

Poirot also talks to Mr Barnes, one of the patients who used to be secret service, and the man thinks that this is a plot, and the intended victim was the banker, Mr Alistair Blunt. There are people who believe that he represents an old system that needs to be scraped. So he thinks that maybe Morley was approached to get rid of Blunt, but when he refused, he had to be rid of.

One of the men who are of this opinion is the American patient, Howard Raikes, who was in the waiting room, but left before being treated, and nobody saw him leave. Raikes admits to wanting Blunt dead because he is the rot of the world in the system he defends.

Raikes turns out to be connected to Blunt's niece, Jane Oliviera. The woman calls Poirot to tell him that three months ago when her uncle first went to the dentist, he was approached by Mabelle Sainsbury Sale, claiming that she had been acquainted with Blunt's wife. Blunt thinks that what the woman wanted was a subscription to some charity magazine, but Jane thinks that this is suspicious. Before leaving the house, Poirot and Jane talk, and she is curious to know why he expected her call. And Poirot guesses that Jane is linked to Raikes, and the woman eventually admits that she is in love with him, and shares some of his ideas. Yet, since she came to live with her uncle she has come to realise that her uncle is not the evil man Howard tends to think it is. And Jane got him to the dentist that day because she wanted him to meet her uncle.

Gladys, Morley's secretary, also comes to see Poirot, and she thinks that she can't believe that Morley made a mistake with Amberiotis because the amount of anaesthetics used in the procedures is always the same, so there is no way Morley made a mistake. Poirot asks her about her boyfriend, and she says that he came to the surgery that day to tell her and Morley that he got a good job. Poirot is suspicious when Gladys says that his job involves his staying away in the country from Monday to Saturday, and she doesn't even know what kind of job is. Poirot asks her to arrange a meeting with Frank, and the man is not very agreeable, talking disparagingly about Morley.

I am very intrigued and wonder who killed Morley. Was his death really connected to Alistair Blunt? And what about Miss Sainsbury? Where is she?
