The Disappearance of Stephanie Mailer 3 (Pages 117 - 230)

SPOILERS!!!

The Darkness Night, which has appeared several times during the investigation, seems to be some kind of curse. Many claim that before the murders and the start of the festival there were strange occurrences. Now that the murder of Stephanie has been linked to the festival, people are scared and all the volunteers abandon. Mayor Brown finds himself without a play for the festival, and when the local paper editor demands to know, he says that he will announce the play which will be a sure bet.

Kirk, the former chief of police, is located through his father, and they find him in Los Angeles. He is the reason why Stephanie travelled to California. Jesse travels there, and Kirk confirms that Stephanie came to see him. As Jesse has the local newspaper with him, Kirk reads that Mayor Brown is going to present the play of the festival on Friday, but Jesse explains that he thinks he is bluffing and he is desperate. Kirk then wants him to arrange for him to have his play 'The Darkest Night' in the festival, and Betsy goes to see Brown, who agrees wholeheartedly. Kirk tells Jesse that he does not think that Tennenbaum was the killer, but he will only reveal the truth during the play.

One of the reasons they went after Tennenbaum in 1994 is the fact that he was not in the theatre when the murders were committed. The testimony of Buzz Lambert, the company's director, was fundamental. Tennenbaum was the fire officer on duty in the theatre, and Buzz says that around 7 a hairdrier caught fire and Tennenbaum was nowhere to be found, so they use a fire extinguisher. Betsy and Derek go to talk to them, and they manage to glean a few details that were overlooked twenty years ago. Buzz says that the dressing room hwere the hairdrier was was empty, and it was Charlotte's. Earlier there had been an electricity outage and Charlotte must have left the drier on. Betsy and Derek discover that Charlotte is the actress Kirk went out with for a year, but she is now the mayor's wife. Buzz also says that Charlotte was not found anywhere when the hairdrier caught fire, and later he upbraided her sternly. He also remembers that when she reappeared, her feet were completely wet, and Derek then tells Betsy that detail is suspicious. A pipe had burst in Mayor Gordon's yard and the lawn was waterlogged. Maybe Charlotte was there for some reason, which makes her a suspect.

Apart from the investigation, there are a few characters who I can't seen the connection to the whole thing. Jerry Eden is the CEO of a TV channel, and he and his wife have problems with their nineteen-year-old daughter, Carolina, who gets drunk and high continually. They have taken her to therapy to no avail. This last time she sneaked out of the house and the police found her sleeping in an alley. Cynthia, Jerry's wife, thinks that Jerry could do much more, and then Jerry decides that he and Carolina are going to stay in Orphea, where I think they spent their holidays. It seems that Carolina is depressed because a girl, Tara Scalini, died, and it seems she is to blame.
