These are the characters in the series for future reference

Regular characters

  • DI Kate Fletcher (46) is the main character. Kate is a detective and grew up in the village where the murders take place. Kate is divorced and has a son, Ben, but they don't have a close relationship. 
  • DC Dan Hollis is one of the detectives in Kate's unit. He and Kate work closely together.  
  • DC Sam Cooper is a detective in Kate's unit. Sam is the expert in computers. 
  • DC Barratt is an officer in Kate's unit.
  • DCI Raymond is Kate's boss. 
  • DS O'Connor is a detective in narcotics.
  • Karen Siddon (43) is Kate's sister. She doesn't seem to settle down, and during Kate's investigation she is travelling throughout India. 
  • Garry is Kate's exhusband. He is now living with a girlfriend who is half Kate's age and is expecting a baby. 
  • Ben is Kate's son, and after the divorce he drifted from him. He is now studying at Sheffield University. He is kidnapped by the murderer, but thankfully Kate saves his life.
  • Kailissa is the police pathologist.

Characters in this novel

  • PCSO Drew Rigby is the killer. He is a police constable and killed the two children out of revenge. He wanted to punish their families for the part they had in the death of her sister and father. 
  • Aleah Reese (7) is the little girl who disappears and is found dead.
  • Jackie Reese is Aleah's mother.
  • Craig Reese is Aleah's stepfather. He is brought in for questioning when the police discover that he has lied. Aleah didn't go missing from the garden of the house. Craig actually took her to the bookies, and when she went to buy sweets, she disappeared. Craig is arrested when the police discover that he is involved in alcohol and cigarette smuggling.
  • Callum Goodwin (4) is the other child who is murdered.
  • Trevor and Anna Goodwin are Callum's parents. 
  • Tracy Moore (7) is the child who died in 1975 when she sneak into the mine shaft to prove some girls who were bullying her that she was brave. 
  • Paul Hirst was Rigby's father who committed suicide as he was bullied by other miners because he continued working during the strike.
  • Barbara Wilkinson was Rigby's mother.
  • Ken Fowler led the search for Aleah, and becomes a suspect when he also finds the boy who went missing. Ken is arrested when the police discover that he is part of a smuggling ring. 
  • Dave Porter is Aleah's birth father. He works in a rig in Scotland, and Kate discovers that he wasn't in the rig when Aleah went missing. He confesses that he told his mother a lie because he wanted to be with his girlfriend that week. 
  • Áileen Porter is Dave's mother. 
  • PC Tatton is the Family Liaison Officer for Aleah's family.
