The Ruin - Cormac Reilly 1 - by Dervla McTiernan (Pages 1 - 32)

 First Published: 2018

In February 1993 a young garda, Cormac Reilly, responds to an emergency call received at the station.

When he finally finds the house, there is a fifteen-year-old girl, Maud Blake, who takes him to see her mother. The mother is dead, and Cormac can see that she has overdosed. The girl asks him whether he is going to take him and her brother Jack to the hospital because she really wants her brother to be taken care by a good family. Cormac says that he hopes that they can stay together. Cormac takes them to hospital, and the boy who is crying is examined by the doctor while Maud says that she needs to go to the toilet. Then Cormac realises that two hours have passed since Maud went to the toilet, and that is the last he sees of her.

Twenty years later in 2013 in Galway Aisling Conroy, a doctor, returns home to her partner, Jack, after her night shift at the hospital. We understand that Jack is the little boy who Cormac took to hospital in 1993. Aisling tells Jack that she is pregnant, something that is not good news as she wants to train as a surgeon and a baby would spoil her chances. She says that if they had the baby, she could try to be a family doctor, but we get the impression that she wants to have a termination. Aisling goes to bed, and when she wakes up, Jack is nowhere to be found. Aisling wonders if he is upset, and then the police come to tell him that something bad has happened to Jack.

Interesting start. I think this is going to be a good read.
