New Book - Death and the Courtesan - Arabella Beaumont 1 - by Pamela Christie (Chapters 1 - 4)

 First Published: 2013

Arabella Beaumont is a courtesan and has been the lover of Henry, the Duke of Glendeen, for some years.

Then she discovers that another courtesan, who she had fallen out with, Euphemia Ramsey, has been murdered, and a paperknife with Arabella's initials, which went missing some weeks ago, has been found in the scene of crime, so she is to expect her arrest. Arabella tells Henry that she can prove that she didn't kill Euphemia because she and Henry were together all night. Yet, Henry says that he can't tell the truth because he is to marry, and his fiancée can't discover where he was. So Arabella complies, but Henry helps her by mediating with the home secretary. Arabella's sister, Belinda, tells her that the home secretary has agreed to delay her arrest as long as she investigates and finds out who killed Euphemia.

The style of the novel is quite sassy and humourous. I thought I was not going to like it, but I am growing fond of Arabella, her sister Arabella, and their household.
