The book starts with a historial note.
Hamnet was the son of William Shakespeare. He had a twin sister, Judith, and an elder sister, Susanna. Hamnet died at the age of eleven, and Shakespeare wrote Hamlet the year afterwards. It seems that Shakespeare's Hamlet was connected to his relationship with his son.
As the book starts, Hamnet runs to find someone to his grandfather's house and workshop to ask for help because his sister is sick. Yet, there is nobody there, and he wonders where everybody has gone to.
