SPOILERS!!!
Cormac starts investigating the death of Hilaria Blake, and he discovers that there was someone that visited Jack when he was admitted to hospital. The name is Tom Collins, and he is a solicitor, and at the time he was fifteen. Cormac guesses that he was a friend of Maude's. When he goes to visit the solicitor, he tells him that Hilaria neglected her children, and it was Maude who looked after her brother as their mother was drunk all the time. Maude had to leave school and made sure that her brother went to school every day, was fed and looked after. She got a job at a nearby farm, and that is how she got some money for their food. Collins says that there was a woman, Domenica Keane, a very religious woman, who came to the house often, and he claims that she supplied Hilaria with alcohol.
Cormac tries to find the file from social services, but he is told that there was a flood and the file was lost. That is why he calls Tara, who we understand was in a relationship with Cormac some time ago and works in the social services department, and she says that there were several social workers for the Blakes, and she gives him the name of the last one. Cormac visits Katherine Shelley, who is not a social worker any longer. The woman says that there was evidence that the children were abused and neglected by their mother, but things were done differently back then. Katherine saw that it was Maude who looked after her brother, so she took them to the office, but her boss upbraided her for removing the children from their home. It seems that the boss was friends with Domenica Keane, and she had called him to complain. So Katherine had to take the children back, and she remembers that Jack was very scared.
