The Single Ladies of Jacaranda Retirement Village 2 - The End (Pages 220 - end)

 RATING: ENTERTAINING

SPOILERS!!!

The most important point in the book is the reason why these two women, Peggy and Angie, did not keep in touch for thirty years. They were good friends at school and even worked together in a department store. Peggy has always looked up to Angie because she was glamorous and unconventional.

Angie tells Peggy that she had a child, a boy who died when he was three years old. This is a turning point as Angie wants to talk about the boy, Simon. Yet, there is always something that prevents it. Peggy has to prove to her children that she is not suffering from dementia, and her memory lapses are the result of the drug that the doctor prescribed. And she passes the doctor's test thanks to her cunning tricks.

The committee works hard to organise the fashion show and the karaoke, and the day that it takes place, Angie does not turn up. Peggy goes to her unit and manages to get inside through a window. Angie is lying on the floor, very sick, as she has heart problems, and she says this is it for her. Peggy can't get hold of the doctor on the phone, so she leaves a message for Brian. While she is there, Angie confesses that her child was Ted's, Peggy's husband. It only happened once, the night they went to the cinema together, and she never had the intention to tell him about the baby because she knew Peggy and he were very much in love. This is not a surprise for me as a reader, as the author dropped us hints throughout the book. Peggy is shocked but understanding at the same time. The doctor arrives and they take Angie to the hospital.

The last chapter in the book shows that Angie has recovered but it seems that she doesnt' have long to live. And Peggy finally has the nerve to ask Brian out, and he confesses that he is attracted to him, and they get together.

I love books about independent elderly people with a bit of humour, and I really enjoyed this one.
