New Book - Bailén - Episodios Nacionales 4 - by Benito Pérez Galdós (Pages 1- 57)

First Published: 1873

In the last book we left Gabriel and Celestino imprisoned and a death sentence hanging over them.

In this new novel we find that Gabriel is recovering. The people who look after him tell him that he survived the execution as his wounds were not lethal, but Celestino died. Then he discovers that this is the place where Juan de Dios lives. Juan de Dios is very upset when he tells him that after taking Ines with him alongside Lobo, the latter deceived him and took Ines away, allegedly to take her to her real family for some money.

When Gabriel recovers, he sees Lobo, who tells him that he took Inés to her relatives, but now they have gone to Andalucia. So Gabriel decides to go with one of the guests in the house where he has been recovering, Luis de Santoraz. From his landlady and landlord, Gabriel learns that Santoraz was disowned by his family when he was young as he went off the rails, and then he left for France where he served in the army. Santoraz is now an admirer of Napoleón and thinks that Spain will fall to the French troops just like all the other European nations.

Gabriel goes to Andalucia with Santorza, and as part of their group there is Andresillo Marijuán. On their way they find devastated villages which have been raided by the French. They arrive in Bailén, and they are welcome by Doña María Castro, who is Marijuán's mistress. Her son, Don Diego, is to leave for the war, and Marijuán is to go with him.

I wonder if Gabriel will find out where Inés is and what will happen to her.
