Death At Whitewater Church - Characters


 SPOILERS!!!

These are the characters in the novel for further reference:

  • Ben (Benedicta) O'Keefe is the main character. She is a solicitor and deals with many legal matters in the area. Ben's real name is Sarah, but she changed it to her second name (Benedicta) and her mother's maiden name when she moved her. Ben left Dublin after her sister's death. Faye started going out with Ben's boyfriend and colleague after Ben broke up with him. That caused a rift between the sisters. Faye was reckless, and Luke was a cocaine user, and Ben knew that her sister has started using cocaine. One night Faye called her four times, but Ben ignored her calls, and the next day her sister appeared strangled. Her boyfriend was arrested, but during the trial he said that Faye had died after a consensual sexual practice had gone awry, so he was only charged and senteced with manslaughter and got ten years. Ben's parents are not happy and want a more firm punishment, but Ben doesn't want them to discover that she ignored Faye's calls and the fact that Faye used cocaine. That was what pushed her to leave Dublin, and now she visits them very infrequently. Ben is happy in Donegal, and has a good friendship with the local sergeant, Molloy, and there is some attraction between them, but neither of them seems brave to talk about the kiss that almost happened on New Year's Eve.
  • Sergeant Tom Molloy is the local guard. He and Ben are close, and it seems that he is attracted to her, but for some reason he doesn't want to acknowledge it. 
  • Garda Andy McFadden is a local policeman. 
  • Leah McKinldy is Ben's receptionist.
  • Dr Laura Callan is the pathologist who does the postmortem to the skeleton. Ben identifies as the pathologist in her sister's case, whose testimony resulting in Luke having a lesser sentence. Laura and Molloy are friends. They met at university and Ben seems jealous of their relationship.
  • Maeve is a local vet and Ben's best friend. 
  • Conor Devitt (39) is a man who disappeared six years ago. When the skeleton is found, it is believed it is his, but Conor reappears when the police conclude that the skeleton is not his. He confronts Raymond, the husband of his lover and the man who tried to kill him, and he shoots him dead. 
  • Danny Devitt (36) is Conor's brother. He is described as a peculiar character, a drunk and better at treating animals than people. Danny had an argument in the church with his brother over Lisa, Conor's fiancée because Conor intended to leave her. Danny left him there, and when he returned and saw through the window a dead body, he thought it was Conor and he had killed him. He lived with this guilt all these years. Danny is killed when Alison realises that he has discovered the truth.
  • Liam McLaughlin is the estate agent who worked for the Kellys to manage the sale of their properties, including the church. In this last case he jumped the gun and started negotiations before Kelly told him he could do it.
  • Raymond Kelly is the owner of the church where the skeleton is found. Raymond has a brain tumour and not long to live. Raymond turns out to be responsible of the skeleton. He left Conor Devitt for dead in the church after they had an argument and hit him in the head. Raymond did not bother removing the body all these years. When Conor confronts him at the end of the book, he kills him.
  • Alison Kelly is Raymond's wife. She had an affair with Conor, but refused to leave with him. When Ray left him in the church badly hurt, Alison helped him escape and they moved a body to the church, intending to deceive Raye. Danny, Conor's brother, discovered the truth, and Alison killed him by driving him off the road. 
  • Paul Doherty works for the estate agent, Liam.
  • Eddie Kearney works as a barman in the local pub. He tends to use drugs and has several reports from the police, and Ben represents him. When he realises that he may end up in prison, he tells Ben that he has information to give the police in exchange of having his charges dropped. He actually saw Danny's car being pushed off the road into the pit. 
  • Hal McKiley is the local undertaker. He is a member of the drama club Ben is a member of.
  • Phyllis Kettle owns a bookshop and is also a member of the drama club.
  • Claire Devitt is a designer and a member of the drama club. She is Conor's sister.
  • Eithne O'Connel is the local chemist and also part of the drama club. Eithne and Claire are very close friends. Eithne used to be a nun and worked as missionary in Africa. The police discover that she and her brother are the burglars that had been troubling the city. Eithne did this as a way to provide funds for charity.
  • Mick Bourke is a local carpenter. Conor used to work for him before he disappeared. Mick turns out to be the burglar alongside his sister.
  • Lisa Crane McCauley is Conor's ex-fiancée. Conor ditched her the day of her wedding and went away without telling anyone because he wanted Ray to believe he was dead. Lisa has just married and it seems her husband is violent.
  • Mary Devitt is the Devitt's mother.
  • Stephen McFerry is the young man whose body was moved from the cemetery to the church. He is a registered petty criminal and died in a car crash.
  • Pat McFerry is Stephen's father.
  • Faye was Ben's sister. She was killed by her boyfriend.
  • Luke Kirby is the man who is serving ten years in prison for killing Faye. 
  • Jack Devitt is Conor's father, and he killed himself after his mental health declined when he witnessed some of his colleagues of the boat were killed.
  • Alan Crane is Lisa's husband. 
  • Trevor Kelly is Raymond and Alison's son.
  • Eamonn McCauley is the pilot who was shot when the Sadie went down. Eamonn is Lisa's father
