New Book - Holy Island - DCI Ryan 1 - by L.J. Ross (Pages 1 - 24)

First Published: 2015

This novel is set on Holy Island in Northumberland, a place with becomes isolated when the tide is out.

When Liz, a local woman, is walking her dog, she discovers the dead body of a local girl, Lucy. She has been left naked in the court of the abbey. Liz runs to call DCI Ryan, who is living on the island as he has been on leave for some problems he has had.

When Ryan goes there, he is horrified, and the way the body has been left shows that it has a ritual element in the arrangement. Ryan calls his boss, Gregson, telling him that he is ready to resume work and lead the investigation. Gregson refuses at first, but when Ryan tells himt hat he has inner knowledge of the locals as he has been living there for three months, Gregson agrees. As the island has been blocked from the mainland since last night, this means that the murderer is among those on the island, so Ryan asks the coast guard to make sure nobody enters or leaves the place, which is difficult as it is the winter solstice and many tourists come to the island for the day.

Interesting start. I am sure I'm going to love the novel. I was on Holy Island some summers ago, and it is really a great place to develop a mystery.
