The Clockwork Girl 2 (Pages 47 - 73)

 SPOILERS!!!

The novel is told from three different points of view. Apart from Madeleine, there is Veronique, Dr Reinhart's daughter. She has spent most of her childhood in a convent after her mother died, and she hated it. Her only relief was when her father wrote to her, including enigmas and riddles. Now that she is out of the convent, she is learning from her father and her dream is to become a mecanicien like her father. The nuns told her that there are two possible paths for a woman: taking the veil or marrying. Veronique doesn't want either of them, and when a friend of her father's, Lefevre, visits him and she overhears him tell her father that he can't be so naive as to think that Veronique can follow his steps, she is afraid of what the future will hold for her.

The third point of view is of Jeanne Poisson, Madame Pompadour, the mistress of Louis XV, who is feeling sick and tries to hide it from her lover, the king.
