Bailén 2 (Pages 57 - 103)

SPOILERS!!!

Gabriel and Santorcaz decide to join don Diego. Santorcaz stays behind because he has to receive some letters, but Gabriel departs towards Cordoba. Before leaving, Doña Maria tells her son to visit his cousins and give them some letters. Gabriel is shocked to discover that the letters are addressed to Amaranta.

In Cordoba Gabriel does not waste time and goes to visit Amaranta, wondering if Ines is with her. As soon as he steps in the palace, he has the hunch that Ines is not there. Amaranta welcomes him, and her aunt, the Marchioness of Leiva, and her uncle, the Marquis are there. When they leave, Gabriel tells Amaranta about Ines, and how they are in love. Amaranta grows angry and throws him out of the house.

The next day Gabriel is walking the streets when he feels drawn to a chuch, and he seems to hear someone calling his voice. He gets inside, and in a chapel he sees a group of nuns, and he seems to think one of the nuns is Ines. When he is asked to leave the church, he bumps into the Marquis, who asks him to go and visit Ines, the novice and hand her some letter from Amaranta. Gabriel goes to the convent and is led to a room where Ines in nun attire appears with an older nun. At first, they talk formally, and then Ines asks the other nun to bring her some presents for Amaranta. When they are left alone, Ines tells her that they took her here, and she decided to stay with the nuns, and that made Amaranta and the family angry. Gabriel tells her that she needs to take her place among people who are her blood. Inés tells him that what they want is to marry her off to some suitable man, and Gabriel says that even so, she needs to leave the convent. And he also explains that he has now joined the army and ia a soldier.

The next day Gabriel, don Diego, and Marijuan leave Cordoba, and Santorcaz join them half way. From Gabriel we learn that the army from Andalucia is a mixture of many different types from nobility to miscreants. Money and resources are scarce, but as the days pass, and they don't find the French, life is easy, and don Diego start enjoying life as a soldier.
