SPOILERS!!!
There are some horrible people in this novel. Conor, the policeman, who allegedly found the evidence against Father Thomas without a warrant, seems to have a vested interest in the case. It seems that for some reason he wants a conviction for Father Thomas. He goes as far as going to the hospital, pretending to be Danny's uncle, and then he almost kills him when he refuses to say where Father Thomas has the shelter records. Thankfully, a nurse comes before he can do any more damage.
Father Thomas is in hospital too. There seems to be some fishy goings on because the priest is taken to have some blood tests to compare his DNA with the blood found in his office. Then when he is returned to the prison, the shift of the officer in charge finishes, so he is handed to another one who takes him to a cell in the main area instead of the cell where he was protected. There he is beaten to a pulp, and he suffers severe damage to his brain.
Peter goes to visit him, thinking that it is illogical for the authorities to send for him for a blood test on Christmas' Eve. After seeing him, he decides to go and talk to Danny, and he is also told that he has taken a relapse when he was with his uncle. Peter thinks that a boy like Danny, who was once a resident of the shelter, can't really have an uncle, and he grows suspicious.
Conor goes after the district attorney, Ramsey, and he threatens to reveal something he knows if he does not pay him good. Apparently, his father left the police in disgrace, so he feels they owe him big.
I am sure that Father Thomas is innocent, and I wonder who wants to frame him for the death of the boy. Seeing what Conor is like, I wonder if he actually planted the evidence or pretended to have found the evidence, but why?
