New Book - Fear the Darkness - Brigid Quinn 2 - by Becky Masterman (Pages 1 - 54)

First Published: 2014

This is the second book in the series. In the prologue the narrator, Brigid, who is a former FBI agent and currently a private investigator, is locked in some kind of shed and knows she is dying. Yet, she fears that her death would be taken as incidental, so she wants to leave some evidence that it is murder.

The novel then moves back in time. Brigid has to travel to Florida where her parents and her brother live because her sister-in-law, Marylinn, who suffered from multiple sclerosis, has died. Brigid promised Marylinn that if she died, she would help her daughter Gemma-Kate to get into university in Arizona, which means that she will stay with her and Marco.

After the funeral, her brother Todd, who is a detective, brings up the matter, and Marco readily agrees to have the girl with them even though Brigid is nervous about the idea. They travel back to Arizona. Gemma-Kate is quiet and well-behaved, but Brigid doesn't know how to treat her. Mallory, Brigid's friend from church, invites her to the youth group and she meets Peter, and they start hanging out.

As the narration continues, we know that something bad is going to happen because Brigid keeps dropping hints, and I think it is connected with the girl.

Mallory invites Marco and Brigid to a fund-raising do, and she warns them that she has invited a married couple, the Nielsens, whose son drowned some time ago, and the woman, Jacquie, is quite distraught about the whole thing. When Brigid and her husbadn arrive, Mallory tells them that it was a bad idea to invite the Nielsens. Tim, who is Mallory's husband's doctor, and Jacquie are with the priest, Elias Manwaring and his wife Lulu, and it is obvious that Jacquie is giving them a hard time. When Marco and Brigid join them, they talk for a bit, adn when Marco reveals that Brigid is a private investigator, Jacquie writes something on the back of her husband's calling card and gives it to Brigid. The Nielsens leave, and then Brigid writes what Jacquie wrote on the card: help me.

This is an interesting start. We know that something is going to happen, and I am curious to know what.
