SPOILERS!!!
David and his mother manage to sort out their problems, and even though Beatty is very afraid, Edward makes her see that she needs to put her feelings aside. Edward is proud of David, which is a normal way of thinking of the period.
David gets a letter, telling him that he is to join the North Midland Rifles, and he is summoned to call for duty. He writes to his parents about his routine there as well as his fellow soldiers.
Laura, Edward's sister, and her new friend, Louise, are now learning to drive. They are staying with other women to learn to drive, and they comment that now that the men are at war, there will be jobs for women.
I am afraid for David and what will happen to him when he is sent to fight. I hope he keeps safe.
